pz27 mikuni style carb for a 390
I know carb upgrades have been discussed on many threads and I've read most of them so I apologize in advance for yet another carb question. I have laying around a new 27 mm "Mikuni" style (I think) that I had bought a while back to put on my Honda recon . I know its taller and would need an adapter as well as some throttle cable engineering but wouldn't this carb be an upgrade over the stock carb I have on the clone 390? I attached a pic of the carb from an eBay listing(if I violated a rule let me know and i'll amend my ways), I'm not looking for maximizing power but wanting a reliable smooth carb as I just put put around our place and have no need for speed

Re: pz27 mikuni style carb for a 390
I thought about replacing my 460 carburetor with a Mikuni Super BN and like you I wanted reliability but more I wanted simplicity. I replaced mine with one of VC's 24mm carb's with the 3 fuel circuits. It's the same carburetor that's on Vegas's new 625cc Torque Monster engine. I installed an adjustable main jet kit in it and I got my air/fuel screw out and replaced, it tuned like the original. I know this sounds complicated but it's not. If your not looking for big power -- stay with the stock carb just install a needle jet kit in the Main jet.

I bought a PZ30 for my GX390. I got it a week ago but it has been either too cold or raining for me to mess with it. I am looking forward again to having 5 areas of adjustment for jetting/tuning the carb.

waterlooboy2hp has one left on Ebay at this moment. The part is $9.79 delivered and works well and is easy to install.

Re: pz27 mikuni style carb for a 390
The clone carb you take the main out of the bottom of carb and put a huge one in, then put the needle in the outside bowl that goes up into it and makes it smaller depending on adjustment.
I think the slide or PZ carb would be much nicer. I ran a CV carb and it ran perfect and smooth, much nicer than the clone carb. I now bought a slide carb to try with a pumper also like the CV, though not entirely sure you need a pumper and they cost more. But nice for starting in cold weather. Anyway the issue with the CV is it ran perfect and performed same as clone carb even though it was larger at 32mm. When I put a cam in the clone it didn't seem to want to go much faster. After much trial and error I found the CV didn't want to open enough. I tied up the spring shorter in the slide and it goes a lot better WOT now. Is it still holding it back I don't know, but with research I found others saying the CV is not the ticket for max power. I want to put it on the stock 420 when/if I get the new slide carb working on mine. I was able to gps 34mph in a hay field lol, not 38 gps I did on the road before the cam but its a hay field and it slows you down for sure and it was a limited distance run not the half mile I ran down a paved road. It sure feels like it has more power. Not been able to get the new 30mm slide carb in I have to make a spacer and stuff, and really top speed is not a big deal to me just a test score. This thing tries to rip the tires loose all the time now, I'm happy with it, other than the block bolts coming loose again. |

I have the 625 carburetor and was wondering how you guys get the air/fuel screw out? Where do you get the screw to replace it?

As far as the new mixture screw --- I make them on my lathe. It's a pain in the butt to get out but sure worth the effort. |

Where do you get different slides for adjusting these cheap carburetors. Do you re-cut your old one?
