Default Vegas Carts Tach

After much fiddling, rerouting wires, rewinding wire on the spark plug lead I have concluded my inexpensive digital tach can't cope with lengthening the sensing wire. It worked passable with the supplied 3' wire on the Robin 295 and the 625, but when I moved it from the engine compartment to the dash with about 10' of wire it can't handle it. It is no where near any power wire, the wire is shorter than the allowed 14', but at 18mph it ranges from 2600rpm to 4100rpm at a steady throttle setting. It works fine as an hourmeter but not as a dash mounted tach.

I would prefer an analog tach anyway. I am confident VC's tach would perform flawlessly but would prefer something smaller with a needle. VC's is the smallest I can find that claims to work with the magneto ignitions on clone type engines like the VC625. I just don't relish the look of a 3.5" tach mounted on the steering wheel like some '68 big block Chevelle of my youth. I have to find a place on the dash or on the cupholder area to mount it so I can glance at it easily. The smaller the better.

Also, for those of us who are using the VC tach does it tolerate enough wire to mount it near the dash without reducing accuracy?

There is a thread about the VC tach. My VC tach is still in the box. It is smaller than the Equus 8068 I have.

Thanks for the tip Brutal. I searched again and found this thread.

Vegas Carts Tach

I guess I will find a way to use the 3-3/8" tach instead of looking for something smaller. The VC unit has to be good and I see by that thread, and my 625 wiring diagram, I can wire it from the dash and not have to run a wire all the way to the engine compartment.

I hook up my tachs to the coil kill wire. The wrap the plug wire way never works for me.
Careful hooking to the dash. The wire from the dash to engine area usually are wrapped with the power wires. I received better results when I ran a dedicated wire away from all other wiring. Now I have been known to overdo so hooking to the wires up front could be just fine.

I will probably try the dash first. VC makes a note about running along other wires in their instructions. If it doesn't wave back and forth 1500 rpm like the digital tach I will tolerate it. LMAO.

You may have to shield the pick up wire, even running it away from things may not be enough. The cheap way is wrap the wire in foil and ground the foil to battery. You can get shielded wire, auto RCA wire is shielded as is Cat5 wire. You may have to ground both ends of the wire shield. Or you might find wire armor that is metal that will do it.

You're kidding right? Does everyone have to do that or am I just that one lucky guy?

Do we have to do things like that hmm probably not lol. But those are some best result solutions.

LOL, you don't have to do anything But its usually interference in the pickup wire that causes problems and shielding is about the only way to try to reduce it. It may or may not work.

You could also put the wire in a metal tube instead, like copper or conduit, etc. and ground the tube.

Computers and audio all talk through shielded wire, except for optical connections. Most antenna cable is, cable tv is.

That gives me an idea. I bet some rg78 tv cable like Walmart sells would work well. The center conductor is thin like wire and the shielding can be grounded.
