Re: belt tension
You've assumed right. At the most you want about 1.5" of up and down movement. If your cart is still pedal start you could adjust it tighter. If yours will idle in neutral you might get away with 1" of movement. Careful experimentation will tell you where yours likes it best and still cooperate with how you start the cart.
With my stock EZGO engine I had the belt so tight it had to be cut off. But it was pedal start at that time. Gave me much better lower end power and throttle control, and the top end was maintained. If you are pedal starting you could make the belt fairly snug. |

Re: belt tension
You almost want it tight as you can get it without dragging, due to the belts being stiff it will want to be 'round' shape and still stick up between the clutches when it gets to start dragging at idle. That usually ends up being about 1.5" if you push down on the top of belt between the clutches. You could have too wide a belt or bad alignment or something that messes things up as well, the above assumes everything is correct. The belts are so stiff they usually start rubbing on the clutch before they are pulled straight, especially a newer belt or a HD belt. Some of the double cogged are better my gboost would flex more than a stock plain belt, the new gates double cog does not but its still pretty new maybe its not broke in. Its also an atv belt like the kevlar gboost.
When I tested my stock G9 and moved the tension cable all over, the tighter the belt the better it took off from a dead stop. It towed/climbed better. Too tight and I lost top speed. I loosened it up a little and top speed back where it was and it still pulled good on take off. I was taking off going up a hill to test it then down a road top speed. I figured that was the perfect adjustment. |
