Tired of intermittent ignition issues on my Yamaha G2- which engine swap?
Harbor Freight has the Predator 420 on sale right now for $319, or the V-Twin 670 for $669.
Vegas Carts has a 420 install kit for $739. Add $319 for the HF 420, and I'm at $1060 Vegas Carts has a V-Twin install kit for $599. Add the $619 for the factory V-Twin, and I'm at around $1220. Vegas Carts has a 460 kit for $1339 Vegas Carts has a 625 kit for $1699 The cart is just used to cruise through the neighborhood. The speed limit is 20, and we're supposed to follow it. I may also use it at the beach, but not much. It is lift a little with larger tires (I'd have to double check the size). I can fabricate my own stuff, but I am limited on time right now with a boat being rebuilt and a jeep getting an LS engine swap. So, I'd almost rather just buy a kit...unless it is not too time consuming to make mounts/etc. With that said, which route gives me the best bang for the buck? Which gives me the best driveability and 'get in and go' functionality/dependability? My kids and wife will use it regularly, so I want it to be dependable more than anything. Lastly - will all of these use their own ignition source? My G2 runs great. I can get 20mph out of the factory engine...but it randomly dies. I haven't had the time to chase the issue, but I think it is a plug on the ignition module. The wires corroded right at the back of the plug connection, which left me nothing left to solder, so it's hard to repair. I think I am getting an intermittent contact. With that said, I had planned to upgrade anyway. Which option do you recommend, and why? Thanks PS: Yes, I searched. Yes I've read a lot. The 625 is new, so can't find much on it. |

I had electrical issues in my 87 G2 before I did my upgrade. The harder I drove it the worst it got. I had to completely rewired my machine, when I pulled the old wiring out I found more corrosion and bad wires. Unsecured wiring - blue scotch lock connectors - blue butt connectors -- all out in the open. Not one drop of solder or one inch of heat shrink anywhere. I hate mechanics that use prick type test lights and don't silicone the prick hole closed. Have you ever found a wire that was green and corroded inside for no reason -- check it closely and you'll find that prick hole I guarantee. You say you ride on the beach - seal your wiring. Good luck -- you'll find these things when you do your upgrade.

Re: Tired of intermittent ignition issues on my Yamaha G2- which engine swap?
I did a 460cc VC engine and I bought only the parts I needed from Vegas to set it in the cart. I replaced all the rubber engine mounts, I used the steel engine plate and the air filter and adapter. They were out of comet 780's when I ordered so I got it elsewhere. They charge extra money to cover all the phone calls and shop help. Add it up yourself and you'll see. I made all my own parts that I needed for the job. I love these little engines -- I have 2 of them.

I see home depot has the lifan 420 on line sale for $250 at this time for the super cheap option. But I am running a hopped up VC 460 for myself but I would probably do the 625 if I were doing it now.

The lifan is a great engine, do the 460 if you want more performance. I built my 420 up it really runs now, I'm pretty happy with it. Even a 420 will outrun a stock cart like nothing, way more power the speeds are similar. Modded or 460 will rev more and much higher top speeds. The predator twin is something I'd love to play with, but no time right now. It does depend on what you want from the cart, they all give different strengths.
