Default VC 460 kick back

Having some trouble with my 460 wondering if anyone has any ideas. When the engine tries to spin it wants to kick back around like the compression release isn’t working properly. I have roller rockers and usually run my valves at .003 lash. I checked it earlier still at .003 so I though I would tighten them a little because I’ve heard some of you guys running .001/.002. I tried .002 still does the same thing. Sometimes it hangs up and spits back through the carb like a burp then it spins over. It runs great once it starts. The starter/generator is new battery is fully charged. When I get it running I can get it to run slow enough that it hits the compression release. Is it possible that it just isn’t working properly on the start.

How long has this been happening? How do you adjust your valves?

It just started Saturday after you rode it. Did you run it hard - high rpm? No matter what way you drove it - sounds like maybe the compression release is malfunctioning.

We just went for a cruise around the lake no hard driving at all. We stopped hung out with some friends a while went to leave and it wouldn’t turn over. I pulled the rope which was really tough and once I pulled it through by hand it spun far enough to start. Since then it’s acted up. I am thinking maybe the spring on the release broke. Do you think that’s a possibility?

You should back off the flywheel rotation to about 40 degrees BTDC and adjust your valves there. This makes sure the exhaust valve is fully closed. As soon as it fires and the timing mark travels to 90-100 degrees ATDC the exhaust valve opens. You need to remove all doubt the its completely closed -- also the compression release needs to be away from the lifter also.

I would pull the side cover and check the cam and compression release making sure its all together and the spring is in place.

I’m pretty sure I’ve hurt the ol girls feelings and she’s acting out. We ordered a Yamaha drive last week and it’s being customized now so I think she knows her days may be numbered. Lol
