Swapping a VC625 into a 96 Club Car
Some photos of the big block swap we started this past weekend. Decided to pull the whole swingarm out as I am doing a 8 to 1 gear swap as well. Working on getting it all cleaned up and put back in soon. New fuel pump is installed, engine is due this week, ordered new bearings for the gear swap and gonna wire in a tach.

More photos. Stock gear has been pressed off. New 8 to 1 gear as it arrives from CPP (great product protection). Finished assembly with new gear pressed in place.

Re: Swapping a VC625 into a 96 Club Car
So waiting for the engine to arrive has given me some time to work on the primary and secondary. Some pics comparing the stock secondary to the HD secondary supplied from VC. Other photos is the spring and weight arrangement of the stock 780. I have swapped to green springs and 76 gram arms to lower engagement to ~1400 rpm. Will see how that works.

What were your original spring and weight combo? I'll make a prediction -- your machine will have issues shifting out at the original shift point.

My prediction is you will like the green springs. You might have to go to a slightly heavier roller BUT let us see what happens.

Re: Swapping a VC625 into a 96 Club Car
Original setup was blue springs with 71 gram rollers which yielded a ~1800 rpm engagement. Shephard, you think 400 rpm will create issue? Low speed drive ability is a concern is the reason for the change.

Re: Swapping a VC625 into a 96 Club Car
There sure are a ton of model 700 clutches out there. They look alike on the outside but there is technical differences, I would be careful as to where you buy. They may call it a 780 but it could be a 770 - 775 or a 790 -- or worst a Chinese Knock-off. I know the 3-780's I've bought are American made. I use the Comet 302405A model 780. It has an 1800 rpm engagement and 106 gram blue/green weights. This clutch is listed for a heavy model utv. I see the weights doing 2 jobs. I see the weight as a means of creating force to pinch on the belt and to control top end shift out. I see springs as a means of timing the engagement.

Re: Swapping a VC625 into a 96 Club Car
This particular torque converter was supplied by VC, no idea the authenticity of their components but would assume they wouldn't be in business selling crap. Honestly, its not like I moved from one extreme to the other in these changes. I went with one step lighter springs, and one step heavier weights, its a minute change in the grand scheme of things.

Re: Swapping a VC625 into a 96 Club Car
Well, got delayed on the engine delivery from VC. Picked up a 4" A-arm lift from Jake's and started putting that together to pass the time. Upon inspection of the front end, it looks like this cart has been wrecked. Rack mount plate is bent and the tie rod on passenger side is at a weird angle. Looks like more new front end parts are in order.
