Default belt options

I'll say sorry up front for yet another belt question, but I have read through these forums until I'm dizzy, so I am familiar with the "search" feature, haha.

The measurement around the inside of the driving clutch and around the outside edge of the driven clutch measured exactly 3' 7"....43" total.

I've played around with the calculator that is "sticky" on the forum and other calculators online only to become more confused on a correct size. I've also read on this forum to measure around pulleys like I have done, and then add 2-3 more inches? That seems like a lot to me.

1995 medalist
both stock clutches
1.125 wide it appears......which I've not found many belts that wide?? The ones I'm considering are 1.18-1.19.... about 1-3/16 wide I reckon.

I've came up with a belt length anywhere from 43.5 to 43.79 and have saved a few different belts in my ebay cart that are in this range.

Do these seem in the ball park?

Thanks

You want 1-3/16" width. You measure around the spindle if the drive clutch and the perimeter of the driven clutch. The additional is for deflection when installed which should be between 1-2". If your engine mounting plate allows for fore and aft engine adjustment you can adjust belt tension after the belt is installed. Otherwise you make your best calculation and exchange for a different length if it isn't right.

You've made a custom creation. Trial and error can be an integral part of "custom" work.

So I should get at least a 44” belt ya think? Unfortunately I don’t have much adjustment fore and aft......yet haha.

Thanks,
Mike

Also if i go by the numbers Vs measuring I don't even get 43" with the calculator. Maybe I'm not smart enough for this??

Drive clutch Dia 1.5" 1 1/2"
Driven Dia 9.5" 9 1/2"
Distance to centers 11.875" 11 7/8

If I'm measuring the outside of the pulleys then that's the I.D. of the belt, I guess this is why you add more to the overall length because belts are measured O.D?? Still seems like a swag. Thanks so much for the help here BGW forum, haha.

The outside of the driven clutch is the od of the belt. The drive clutch spindle is the id of the belt. You add some because if your belt was that length you might not get it on the clutches without loosening the motor mount bolts.

What I ended up doing was cut my original belt and wrap it tight around the pulleys. The Gap between the ends of the belt measured 1.5" This tells me I need at MIN a 43.5" belt because the original measured out at 42"

I'm looking at a belt that 43.625" x 1.18... I think its a HP 3028

Getting closer to to ending this puzzle. LOL

Thanks,
Mike

I would get a 44 minimum, you need to push down on the belt and get 1.5" slack in center between clutches. Just buy a cheap priced one to try, get a nicer cogged one later. I had to move mine apart and get a longer belt, I forget what a stock G9 is but now I use a polaris scrambler belt. Some people especially with worn clutches do use a 1.25 wide belt, but I'd not recommend with new clutches or at least the primary is new they fit real tight unless you can adjust for it. Mine didn't want to engage right it works better with a 1 3/16 its supposed to have, on a new 94c clutch, but my old G9 worn clutch loved the 1.25 wide belt.
