Clone carbs

I'm about done with cheap chinese carbs. I can't believe how quirky they are especially for start ups. There are cars driving themselves around these days but manufacturing a small engine that starts and runs good every time is still a problem? I know it's not that simple but I'm too annoyed right now to be realistic. Anyway.. I'm looking for an upgrade. Any suggestions? I need something for this 13 HP clone engine.

I recently installed an adjustable main jet kit. It made all the difference for the better. Now I can fine tune the main jet by turning a thumb screw. Along with an adjustable low speed needle screw, you should be able to fine tune the carb exactly how you need. EC Carburetors sells the kit, but I think others do too. I’d like the item but I don’t know if it’d violate the forum rules.

You should really have a choke if you already don’t. It’ll guarantee easy starting no matter the temperature. You’ll need a GX390 remote choke bracket and a generic choke cable. It surprises me how many people here don’t have a choke installed. For a total of $40, you can have a remote choke and never have to worry about starting issues again, even if it’s below freezing.

I've wrote about the cool ideas your speaking of. I do a lot of carburetor work. If you use a key start setup with and electric starter a choke is a must have item. The adjustable main jet is the greatest thing sense sliced bread. Saves you so much setup time and aggravation dialing in the main circuit. Having an adjustable fuel/air mixture screw is the only way to have a proper fuel/air ratio for a strong idle.
The folks who run a starter/generator - some don't run a choke of any kind. The starter/generator turns the engine over faster and longer then an electric starter can. Starter/generator turns the engine 6-800 rpm till the engine starts. An electric starter needs all the help it can get, so a choke is necessary.
This is my carb on a VC460 powered cyclecar. Fully adjustable by hand.

Just to add to what Shepard said. I am one of those guys using a S/G for starting. There is a BIG power difference with the carb throat cleaned up and no choke. A hot rodded clone likes to be on the rich side and my starts even in cold weather. BUT my snowmobile cart with a electric started needs a choke any time from a cold start. And which ever way you do it the better flowing your air cleaner set up is the more power you make.

In my case I used the VC billet intake manifold as my air cleaner mount. I then bolted it to the carb throat and marked areas that didn't match.Then carefully blended those edges for something like a port match. I was very careful in the floor area and around the brass orifices on the sides. More aggressive on the roof where the choke shaft had come thru.The top hole I threaded and red loc tited a large head machine screw. On pg 13 of my Vc 460 build shows my whole set up with the VC manifold and the oval K&N with my Ray produced UNI filter sock.It JUST fits in my G14.

I opened up this carburetor's throat, I tried to keep it uniform and that was my problem. I removed to much material behind the bottom choke shaft hole and the venturi radius. That was where my leak came from. I had buffed to much the fuel passage to the float needle. The brass air bleed jets can be drove in deeper with a punch that has a flat bottom. I'm going to try again when I finish some of my other projects. Miles to go before I sleep ---
