Default Some carnage. Rod let go on my stock 420 clone

Rod let go on my stock 420 snowblower clone motor in my G2 tonight. Time for a billet Rod on the next motor me thinks.

Speaking of the next motor, what do you guys recommend? I don't want to spend a ton and shipping to Canada from Vegas carts can get out of hand. I'm thinking another 420 with a billet Rod and flat top piston or should I splurge for the 460 kit or maybe even save for the 625 motor? I mostly drive trails and steep hills in a remote area where relability is important. I drive 20+ miles from base camp sometimes and I can't be left stranded. Usually we take two carts out so one can tow the other but not always.

420 the blew up ran great. Tons of power. I ran it ungoverned and it was full throttle most of the time. It's got about 20 hours on it. It blew up about a mile from home on a half throttle cruise in the pitch black night. Had to wait for the other cart to drive out and get me.

Wow personally I would go with the VC 460 kit which is on sale for $349 right now I just bought one about a month ago If that maybe a duromax 440 but by the time u billet rod it and carb and it’ll be just as much or more

That is why it only lasted 20 hours. When these engines are over revved. They don't last long

My duromax has a stock rod no governor and Mobile 1 oil regularly revs to 5600 for short bursts been in the cart for almost 8 years

I think the 460 kit would be your best dollar spent as it comes with a billet rod and torque cam.

I don't believe the type of oil matters to much -- it all based on how much stress the rod body and cap can withstand. A cast rod at that speed, the rods large end is egging out -- the type of oil can't stop that. The stress on the threads in the main body are a source of problems also. A billet rod will cure all that.

Not an endorsement of the cast rod BUT I did run my early VC 460 with the cast rod for 172 hours. I was aware of rpm limits and used 5200 rpms as a red line.Again mainly for short bursts of speed. Nice pic of the rod and piston on my Vc 460 thread. The rod was not egged at all.

That kind of rpm on any stock engine will lead to the same kind of failure. The stock parts just aren't made for that kind of use. They are engineered to last 2000 hours at 3600 rpm, with oil changes every 100 hours. The more rpm you give them, the more parts will wear, flex, and break. The reason the rod is the failure point is because those parts are cast with cheap metal using cheap casting methods, and there is no flex in the part. They also don't have conventional bearings, which as someone pointed out, means the rod itself wears and "eggs out" or wears in an oval shape. Bang. End of rod.

If you need big rpm, you'll want to build an engine that will withstand that kind of abuse. Vegas Carts seems to have the best engine for the money. My 460 will rev past 6000 rpm easily. But, eventually they will fail if you rev them hard all the time.

My recommendation is to modify your driving style to help the engines last longer. There's plenty of people on this forum that have clones last for years and years and years with relatively little trouble.
