VC 460 peeps, what’s your top rpm?
I know this has a billet rod in it and I am wondering what the max rpm this rod can or could take? Or is an ARC or Bull frog one the same or better? Anyone spun their VC 460 with the stock rod to 7000 rpms? With the right cam, carb and exhaust it won’t be a problem to do it. People are spinning 420 & 440 to 8k but with a ARC rod so just trying figure out the next build to start on. Anyone have a VC460 rod let lose yet?

I think your questions would be better answered on a racing forum. As for myself - with the gearing and tire size I'm running I get about 4500 rpm at 44-45 mph. I'm not racing - I just drive it.

I understand that, Shepard. This group is better than most, No bs about that.
I’m sure someone has taken their 460 higher than that tho. No one likes to talk about this stuff much on the face book groups. Even the kart guys don’t talk much about the 460s. It’s rare to find people that talk about it but here. I’m hoping someone spun it to 6-7k . |

Re: VC 460 peeps, what’s your top rpm?
I used to get on 4cycle.com forum they are mostly small block gx200 but they do talk about the 390 and 420 etc.
I ran 5100 at 38 mph gps. Later put a cheater cam and vegas rod and hit 42 mph gps, with 22 tires. But I don't have a tach on it right now. It has 1.3 rockers, ported and cut head, header, 32mm cv carb was on it then. |

Re: VC 460 peeps, what’s your top rpm?
Yep, mine let go around 6300 rpms, but I was running it hard and wide open for a few miles 5+ not a lot of hours on the engine, but what was on it were hard hours, never babied .. other than the rod, crank, and rod bearings everything looks good, not sure what I'm going to do, thinking of going with a Vanguard, or put a couple hun in the parts to rebuild, really been eyeballing a new UTV of some sort..

Re: VC 460 peeps, what’s your top rpm?
I never revved my VC440/460 that high while stock, but I did hit 7k with the rev kit, cam, billet rod, and 30mm carb. Carb and cam will be the biggest issue when revving that high. You'll run out of fuel and you'll float the valves. A stock clone, even VC440/460 in stock form, the con rod will eventually wear since there is not a bearing. The valvetrain will fail as well, probably bend a pushrod or break a spring.
If you want to rev that high, you'll have to build the engine properly. If you spend enough money on it, you can probably rev to 9k or even 10k. Just depends on your budget and skill level. I doubt anyone on this forum has done that for a golf cart. As Shepard said, check with the go kart sites. |

Re: VC 460 peeps, what’s your top rpm?
Mine is a home depot 420 so I don't have the HD block. My vegas rod does have a bearing in it. My stock rod (with stock cam) I ran 5100 on was discolored but had like 3 years running on it. That said I never go that fast, only to test. My clutch shifts about 4100 and I might get up to 4.5-5K rpm once in a while but mostly its too fast for trails and I don't hold it that fast on unpaved backroads and logging trails. I max out at 30-35mph and 20s on trails I usually run. I still use it for yard work with pedal start. It makes the most power around 4K now, so if I wanted to go faster I'd put HS gears in it. But at 35mph my self built lift is getting marginal, I just don't need to go faster only for a short distance for fun here and there. You are exactly right when you say get a UTV, they are built for HD trail running, GC is not its just a fun play toy. Where I run you need a UTV to go all the places, cart is only good for playing and leisure running. Its not safe at speed anyway, but to me its still a lot of fun and useful for a lot of things.
So the 420 with the vegas cheater cam and 1.3 rockers is near a larger cam lift and duration. But it has a more power at 4K for sure, so its more fun to ride it takes off harder at any speed and pulls up to about 35 pretty hard. That is why I like it, that is all I need for riding I do. I have had the side cover bolts come loose and oil start to leak. I have a stud kit for it now and the new slide carb I need to get hooked up before next summer. Carb works nice need to make a bracket to hook up cable to pedal. But family had a rough year here so not sure what future will be. |

Re: VC 460 peeps, what’s your top rpm?
*** iron monkey, it let go at 6300 rpms, but what let go, the rod?
I’ll be running it hard for about 10 seconds only, but between 6-7k rpms. I’ve been on 4cycle.com it’s called Dave’s karts. Good site Slonomo, I don’t wanna dump that much money to get it to rev that high, your talking maybe a 5k Build there. Yeah the vc460 has a bearing, like a vehicle engine, in the rod. I may put the 275 or the 308 Dyno cam so it can make more power. I may get one at half price new so around $75 shipped. I can’t beat that deal either. My other 420 has the Cheater cam, it’s good and has lots of torque. I was going to get the 1.3 roller rockers like u all have, but I got the 1.2 roller rockers for $75 brand new. So I can’t worry about that extra .1 at that price of $75. Are you guys that have bought them 1.3 rockers, using the same stock push rods the 460 or your 420 came with? I guess I read the $99 1.2/3 rockers need shorter push rods but I didn’t see anything on the 1.2 or 1.3 roller shaft mounted we have. |

Re: VC 460 peeps, what’s your top rpm?
You actually need longer push rods for the shaft mounted roller rockers. I have NR produced 6.7" chrome moly units with the NR 1.3 shaft mounted rockers with the head milled .075". BUT I am using the .060" head gasket. Hope this gives some idea on push rod length.

I’ll be running it hard for about 10 seconds only, but between 6-7k rpms. Yes the rod let go, lower half, the cap or maybe a bolt let go not sure, everything around the crank was pulverize.. like I said I was running it hard, had it floored for miles on these country roads, she only runs around 5900/6000 rpms @43mph but I was on a good size hill and about 1/3 of way down I looked at the tach and it was around 6200 and still climbing, something told me to back off but I didn't, wish I had the speedo going because I knew I was moving pretty good.. |
