VRX 460 rod knock solved
Had time today to open up my Vegas Carts long rod 460 and see what caused the rod knock. Surprised to find the rod bolts loose! One bolt was bent. The upper rod bolt took a notch out of the case. The rod and crank look alright, so this engine will get a basic rebuild and maybe some thread locker for the new bolts. Photos...

You might want to rebuild with the HD bolts for VC rod from NRracing.

ARP rod bolts, check! Just got back from doing that. Now what to do with a spare 460? Maybe pick up that mini bike that my nephew doesn't want anymore!

Re: VRX 460 rod knock solved
Is this the one you were building with a big port head?
What rpms were you revving it to? Weird them bolts backed out? |

Re: VRX 460 rod knock solved
This is the engine that I plan to replace with the new VRX 460 and the NR racing big port head... and a few other trick parts. On that tread, we were talking about a better rod for that build, but I don't think I'll be doing that. I think the VC rod is stout enough for 6kRPM with ARP bolts and thread locker torqued to spec. Ordering the rest of the parts next week.

Re: VRX 460 rod knock solved
My nephew was driving it when it failed... he was well over 6000 rpm's I'd guess. Riding in the forest, I could hear it sing. I wonder if those bolts were torqued to spec when it was assembled. Rod looks fine and the cap fits perfectly on the rod.

Re: VRX 460 rod knock solved
I pushed the stock vc rod but with the NR $20 bolts to 6500 rpms.
So I’d say it can take more rpms with good bolts. I wonder at what rpms the stock bolts would break tho. Yours backing out seems maybe the torque spec may have been an issue or who knows. Who put it together? I didn’t use any thread lock on the new bolts, as I don’t think you need that if they are torqued to spec. Besides new bolts and new bearings, what else got messed up? |

Re: VRX 460 rod knock solved
That engine was fully assembled from Vegas Carts as part of the kit for a 91-94 Marathon. Looks like only the rod bearing and bolt was damaged... nothing else. I'll be looking at it all very closely when I clean it all. So far I'll get for it a rebuild kit, ARP rod bolts, Champion rockers and maybe port the head, since I'll have a spare in case...
