DuroMax VS CarrollStream engine
I'm having a debate on what engine to go with. I'm getting a 16 hp briggs & stratton opposed for just about nothing. I'm debating if it's a good choice being that it was made in the 80's. I will be doing a lot of ice fishing with it so it would have to start up easy in the winter. I've been looking at the 16 hp duromax and carrollstream. I remember reading a post that someone said one was more cc then the other. I can't seam to find that thread.

Re: DuroMax VS CarrollStream engine
I got the CS red 16hp, I think it is virtually the same as the Duromax blue. It says Lifan on the label and I read that is what the duro is too. One thing I did note is the CS aircleaner is junk more or less, the duro I saw came with a tall plastic one that looked honda-ish with a circular element instead of a piece of foam (if they still come that way). Since I didn't use the exhaust or intake I didn't care, CS is close enough I could drive there if I had to and shipping was one day for me. It is running well so far no problems other than me finally getting the jetting close now.
The opposed will be much smoother, though on the factory mounts this 16 clone does not vibrate or anything like some said it would. The briggs is a good engine far as I know, I don't know what rpm they will spin likely not that much as they are flatheads. I just worked on a 18hp vertical opposed B&S and it is similar to a 20hp onan opposed I have. Depends on what shape its in and your budget I suppose...how much you will use the cart, etc. You can hog the jets on either to make it run better in the snow. |

Re: DuroMax VS CarrollStream engine
I used the 16 hp Duromax in my Geep1. Runs good....no gov, stock carb and air filter, stock muffler (I added a tail pipe with baffled tip). 30 mph on 22" tires and lots of low end torque.

Re: DuroMax VS CarrollStream engine
Have you had any charging problems? If so how did you fix them. I called maxtool and they said the 16 hp engine don't have a charging system, any thoughts on that. I'm going to need lights so a charging system is a must. thanks for your replys and pics

Re: DuroMax VS CarrollStream engine
From what I understand, it has a 3 amp charging system. That is not enough so I've had to charge the battery 3 time so far this summer. I would definitely set it up the way sho did on his CS engine. Check out his build thread, he used the stock starter/generator. I'm not sure what I am going to do to correct this yet.

Re: DuroMax VS CarrollStream engine
I was thinking the same thing with the starter / generator but I kind of got it sold. I'm going to look around to see what I can find. Thanks for the help

Re: DuroMax VS CarrollStream engine
Yeah look at that big air cleaner, the CS air cleaner is not something you would want to run under the hood of a cart offroad IMO. I think that one might be more of a honda copy. But you can find parts pretty cheap for these I bet one could buy that entire air cleaner.
Far as the coil, CS told me the place next door to them (and others on the net) sell the parts for the clones, he said you can get a second coil for under the flywheel they will fit two of them, and it will bump the charging up. It might be World Parts Center, its in the same building, but their website is pretty vague. I would not doubt a Honda coil would work too....like this one http://cgi.ebay.com/CHARGING-COIL-FI...-/370434505521 Oh here is the world parts they have an ebay store other parts are on there too http://cgi.ebay.com/MAGNETO-CHARGING...item5191f70eaa Cheaper, $15 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=300444300902 Here is some info Quote:
Some say you need to change the flywheel too though. I'll bet you can add another 3A no problem but need to swap for the higher charge. My clone thread is in yamaha gas, search Clone specs. I hooked the charge coil up on that but sure the generator runs anyway. |

Re: DuroMax VS CarrollStream engine
I'm running the 18 hp briggs opposed twin from the 80's. It runs great. The RPM is only 3600-3800 though. But with my 22" tires I'm running about 23-25 MPH. Fast enough for me. The biggest problem is the Briggs is a lot wider than the single cylinder clone engines, making installation more difficult, but it can be done. I hope this helps.
