Default Help! Duromax or Carrol Stream?

Hi guys.

I've ripped out the motorcycle engine from my yamaha G9. Now, its time to re-power. I've found two engines 16 HP that I like, but trying to figure out which one to get. I found the Duro-max 16 w/ electric start for $289 at max tool and I also found a 16HP Carrol stream engine w/electric start for $365. No brainer right? Take the cheaper one...Except, two issues. 1) the duromax does not have a charging system, where the carrol stream engine says it has a 3 amp charging system built in. I don't want to charge the battery all the time...2) I called max tool and they said they have all parts for Duromax if I need them. I called Carrol stream and got an answering machine.....That's not a good sign to start off with!

Do you guys have any suggestion which way to go? Are there any other differences between these engines? I assume both are chinese made?

Also, any suggestions on where to pickup cheap drive and driven clutches for a g9?

Thanks!

I did the Duromax and love it. It does have a charging coil. 3 amp I'm told, but it has been keeping the battery up on the hunting lease for 3 months with no problems. I bought mine off the Maxtool listing on EBAY for the paypal protection. it was here in 4 days. Engine runs smooth and strong. I will use it again for another build. I have a thread with pics posted of the mounting.

I used the same engine in my Geep1 cart. When using the lights a lot, I have to charge the battery every few weeks. Otherwise I like the engine.

I emailed the guy at Maxtool today, and he says the engines he has now do not have the charge coil. You would have to maybe add a coil for a Honda GX390. They have a 3 and 19 amp I available I believe.

Thanks everyone. I may hold off on buying a new engine... Last night I found a steal on craigslist. It was a 1991 G8A completely stock for $390.00. The owners say it won't start and haven't tried to figure out whats wrong. I got it and brought it home. Charging the battery now. Maybe, if I am lucky its something simple.

I figured the clutches by themselves are worth $390, even if the rest of the cart is worthless! The carts in good shape, and also figure I can move parts back and forth between the G9 and the G8.

Now, over to the g8 repair threads, to start figuring out whats wrong!

Sounds like a steal of a deal. A platform to build on for sure.

Does the Duromax 16 HP gas engine accept the stock primary clutch of an EZGO 4 stroke without ANY modification?

I got the CS engine because I can drive there if I had problems, it came in one day. There is supposed to be a place in the same building that sells the parts for them, you can find it on the net they sell ball joints and have same address. It has 3A charge but I kept the stock generator so no charging problems. Note that Home Depot also sells them now but calls it a 15hp. I was told you can put two 3A coils on them, but the higher amp charging uses a different flywheel...or on a honda it does. HD had one with no charging or starter for 250 if you keep the generator. We paid 380 TMD for the CS elec start with 3A charge last spring. Note the aircleaners are different the CS one is cheezy I would not run that piece of foam in a cart its not very good for those dusty conditions. Runs like a top though, great power down low. Had to cut the jet much larger still don't like the carb once in a while it misses a little most of the time its fine, I'm told its a lawnmower carb and that is what you get. They have twice the power of stock cart, you put one in and you will wonder why you didn't do it years ago. With 22s I can turn right in dirt and toss like a 20' rooster spinning the tire. We also put a car muffler and car airbox on it to increase power. I ran a 2" PVC to behind the front body for clean air it works great sometimes you can hear the carb growl out of it when the cart is coming at you.
