Default Poor Pulse suction

Using a Duromax, and a B&S pulse fuel pump. I see other folks have used this combo in the past, mine seems to have issues. Keep in mind I rigged up a mock up fuel setup, each port had 3 feet of clear hose.

Questions:

1. Do i need to get like a bulb you would use on a boat motor to prime? Cranking the thing over i did not see the gas come up the tube at all.
My fuel pump only seemed to suck gas after revving it, and by doing that it only jumped maybe a couple inches of hose max.

2. It would seem to me this is a vacuum issue? when i drilled my pulse fitting, i did not go through the inner plate, my fitting is resting inbetween the little filter for the carb hose and the outer casing. Do i need to cover this hole up and redrill going through the inner plate?

3. Could this all be due to the large lengths of hose i'm using?

Any insight is appreciated.

Picture?

Shorter hose that rises less is always better. Less than 6" of total lift is preferable. You can suck on the vacuum hose and see if you pull fuel up. you won't get any in your mouth.

The pump could have a bad diaphragm as well.

Be sure that is is hooked up correctly. The upper most fitting goes to the suction port on the engine.

I'm not sure I understand your description of where you drilled. You can either drill the plastic spacer behind the carb or the valve cover or use the governor hole.

Shorten your pulse hose to 12" max even if you have to move the pump. There is not alot of pulse action to start with and the longer the hose the more the rubber hose will absorb the pulse effect.
Also, have no idea where you put your pulse hose in the motor, can you post a picture?

That link should take you to the second page of my build's thread, there you'll see pictures of the valve cover. I drilled the hole so it sits behind that yellow filter thing.

My plan is to get my motor remounted this weekend, so once get it in its final resting place, I'll trim down the hose and test again.

Some say the pulse works there. That is a one way valve that lets fumes out of the engine and into the airbox to be burned. It really should be under that plate where it is open to the inside of the engine.

Pulse pumps lose prime and do not prime well. You should get gas too it first and see how it pumps. Even on yami carts the pump is about 1/2 way up the side of the gas tank and if you run it out it has hard time priming unless you fill the tank with gas...so the gas is above the pump then it runs in. They pump fine long as they have prime and don't leak or suck air. They don't need to pump a lot but need to pump. Stock yami cart the gas spurts out the hose at the carb on the starter, once system is full of gas. It has a larger pump but does not run direct from the crank.

I could not use the governor hole on a clone it filled the pump with oil. I plan to drill into the head on top, so its under the rocker cover. I don't like the intake pulse needed a return line it goes crazy at idle it overflowed the carb bad. Or drill both plates so you can put the fitting down into the lower part under the rocker cover, goop it with some JB to get a seal. The AGK site shows a 6.5 hp and that cover is different inside, the plate is half way up you can drill under it, you can't do it that way with a GX390/420.

The pulse signal will be stronger with a shorter line.

If you are very careful (!!!) you can pressurize some fuel tanks just a little, and it will push the fuel up the line to and through the pump. Don't use much pressure at all only a couple pounds/etc. and don't look at me if you mess up your tank keep a close eye on it. Sometimes you can do it with just lung power.

When I use air to push fuel I slide a piece of cardboard over the fill hole
part way and just give a short burst, never suck on a fuel line, your martini
will taste like Tony the tigers butt.

Since my original post, i have shorten the lined to around 7inches for the pulse, and under a foot for the line going to the carb. I had to suck for a long *** time on the pulse hose to get the gas down to the carb, as just cranking it was a waste of battery power.

But after that, i got her fired up and she was going no problem, no issues with idling. And the engine took right off when i gave it juice. (no load, just in neutral.) With that said though, i think i will end up plugging the hole i drilled and moving it to the side so i can go through both plates and seal'r up.

I do need to figure out something to get the gas to the hose initially, because i plan to have a fuel shutoff valve at where the Tank / Hose meet.

Not sure how i could pressurize the tank like you were talking about... would a little bulb on the tank hose work? squeeze it til it hits the fuel pump then crank from there?

If you have no air leaks in the pick up tube or fuel lines you should be good to go as far as keeping the pump primed with the fitting where it is now.
I would also suggest a fuel shutoff if you will be trailering it or leaving it for long periods of time.

I re-drilled a hole which goes through both plates, and covered the old hole with a piece of sheet metal and jbweld. Going to test'er out tomorrow, hopefully the suction is better.
