Default Yamaha G1 new Engine/clutch question

I have an early 80's G1 that had a blown engine. It seems that the G1 is the ******* child of Yamaha and I dont get why (it seems parts are not available/ only for newer models)? Any how, not much of a G1 is left in this cart (frame, rear axle, suspension). I bought the 16hp Duromax and am planning to just swap it in (with some fab work), the old clutch is rusted stuck on the old engine. New clutches I have been looking at are for G2's and up.
So my question is, what clutch should I use with the 16hp duromax and the G1 rear axle (I am planning on keeping the starter/generator and using it for reverse)?

It's over thirty years old ffs, show me anyone other than aftermarket suppliers who still churn out parts for such ordinary equipment and I'll buy you an ice cream. A G1 is hardly in the same league as a turbo charged Monte Carlo.

If you plan on using the cart's starter/generator, you will need an original style clutch with the belt sheave for the s/g. A clutch for a G2 and newer model should work, you will need the taper adapter from CPP and probably will have to cut down the crankshaft for clearance. Check out posts by Sho305 on how he did his clone conversion, yours will be similar.

There are a couple of problems with using the s/g for reverse. The clone engine will not run backwards like the original 2-stroke engine (you probably already know this). Using the s/g alone to provide reverse is a good idea, but it drives the clutch which then drives the transmission. The s/g will not turn fast enough to cause the clutch to engage and drive the transmission. You will sit there cranking the engine over backwards and not going anywhere.

Google is your friend
I was merely trying to point out that Yamaha, Harley Davidson, Melex etc no longer produce parts for 30 + year old golf carts. There is is virtually no market for them to make a profit from since most of the carts are rusted wrecks and have long since been buried. Certain bits may be available but from the OE manufacturer ? Highly unlikely. You own an antique, get used to it and find parts from old stockists or hoarders.

The s/g is only strong enough to turn the engine over to go forward, but not to go in reverse? Interesting, didnt know that!
Thanks for your advise about the clutch.

The gen will not move the cart hardly, that is just belt drag. You could fab something up to the secondary clutch for this but I'm not sure exactly how, it would have to engage just for reverse. Its better to just find a G2/9 rear that has reverse. You can get a bravo yamaha sled and use that engine it will go faster, you can fit the ignition pickup to it. If you don't use the gen to start it you can use a 1" shaft clutch. You can use a G2/9 clutch or G1 if you can find used. You can use penetrating oil and a puller and heat and try to get the old clutch off if its still good.

G1 are really old, but there are still a bunch of them around. It was by far the most popular cart for a good many years, a very robust cart too. Most wear items you can get or people have found subs for them. Not many lifts for them but there are some, and its pretty simple you can make one I did my G9 myself and it is very similar.

The 2 stroke G1 and the old ezgo both run the engine backwards for reverse, if you change out the engine its a problem.

dtmracing,
Have you any updates/luck in swaping out your motor on your G1? I've been online reading about the old G1. I have a local wanting to sale one that is a 79-80 model with no motor for 200.00. I may be getting in over my head where I was going to use a different setup(motor). Any updates on your project? Thanks.

I would not pay too much unless it is nice and you could buy a stock motor for it. But here they still go for 600 for a wreck (but running), seems that people don't realize they are antiques. I like G1 but they are what they are.

You can put any engine in if you don't need reverse. Only G1 and some snowmobiles run backwards. Some skidoo work that way. You can swap in a 4 stroke rear by changing some brackets and such. Depends on what you want to do with the cart I guess.

What rear ends will work on the G1? And what size shaft mainly? And does the
Half moon key have a special size to go by?
I bought a few woodruff/half moons from harwareskank and
They seem to only have real thin ones?
I thought I read on here before where someone had a
Polaris Atv secondary on the G1?
I have a 89 wildcat 650cc sled engine in G1 with civic
Radiator and my secondary keeps coming apart.
This is the third time and each time I've found every part but
Half moon? So if someone could please fill me in on
What shaft size and half moon size for G1?
Rearend issues:/
