Default How do I clean a gas tank??

How do I clean a stock gas tank from a golf cart? It has been sittiing for an unknown time and the electric gas gauge says it has about 1/16th of a tank. I can open the gas gauge port on the tank (about 2 1/2 inches in diameter) if needed (I am sure I can make a gasket if I need to). Is there a chemical that will remove any varnish that is built up? Thanks

There are cab cleaners that will dissolve the varnish. The best way is to remove the tank from the cart, dump the old fuel, and rinse with carb cleaner and fresh gas. Then water and lots of it.... the drain and dry and re-install.

Worked well just used carb cleaner and then rinsed it out with gas. The float for the electric gas gauge has a float on it that I did not spray because it looked like cork or some other material and I wasn't sure if it would get damaged by the carb cleaner. I just wipped it off. Nice thing was the gas tank was devoid of any rust or damage on the inside. The only rust was some surface rust on the lip of the filler tube that the gas cap screws onto.

Thanks
