89' Clubcar DS 15hp Lifan and Lift Build
Took some pictures of my budget build 89 clubcar ds. I got the cart for free. It was in pretty rough shape. The motor was very low on compression and made a very loud clunking noise when it was running. I decided to order a 15hp Lifan engine from home depot. It was 249$ + free shipping. I decided on the pull start version because I want to use the stock Starter/generator from my cart, I intend on have lights, sound system, and a winch so the lifans charger would most likely not be enough. So far ive got about $500 into the cart and still need to find rims/tires.
Ordered from CPP: new leaf spring bushing front and rear, driven clutch slides, thrust washer, clutch weight kit, and the tapered shaft/1" shaft adapter. $150 New 15hp lifan from home depot. $250 Still need tires/rims and maybe a longer belt. all the metal i used for fabbing was scrap I had laying around. |

Re: 89' Clubcar DS 15hp Lifan and Lift Build
my lift is a 7" up and 5" out "Z" lift up front and a 7 inch block lift in the rear. The rear I put the axle under the leaf springs and added a add a leaf from a old trailer I had. then welded new saddles on top of axle and welded three inch blocks on that then drilled a hole through the center of everything on each side and fabbed a top plate with a 1/2 bolt welded through the center to "pin" the leafs and axle all inline. Then secured the axle and leaf springs with heavy duty 9" long u bolts. 2 per side. I still need to extend my brake lines? any ideas? The front Z lift is very heavy duty. Its made out of 3/8" plate steel sandwiching the frame and 1/4" plate steel for the drop and then some more 3/8" plate for supports. all connecting pieces were welded and for added support I ran 3/8" grade 8 bolts through all the joints and also welded the bolt heads and nuts to the plates. Not the nicest looking lift but this is a budget build and It is very heavy duty and should not break.

Re: 89' Clubcar DS 15hp Lifan and Lift Build
The cart sits up alot bigger than i expected. I should be able to run 24" tires pretty easy. Any body have any ideas on a set of tires and rims for this build? remember it is a budget build and the most i would like to spend is $500 max shipped. I like the 10" tempest wheels, but not sure if the offset is enough for me? And I would like to have at least 23" tall by 10" or 11" wide tires.
The engine should be here tomorrow or Monday and my clutch parts from CPP should be here tomorrow for sure. I still need to find away to lengthen my brakes lines and need to somehow fab my stock engine cradle to connect to the new axle mounts or maybe just to the axle tubes on each side with u bolts or something. Still not sure if I should drop the engine cradle down at all or not? Does anybody know off hand if these clondas are taller than the stock engines? And also im guessing I will need a longer belt. Can anybody tell me where i might beable to find a belt a couple inches longer than stock? Thanks for all the help and what do you guys think so far? |

Re: 89' Clubcar DS 15hp Lifan and Lift Build
Im just waiting on my lifan to be delivered lakeman and then I will get started. Hopefully this tues. I will make sure and post more pics when i start the install. From what ive heard these motors are pretty reliable, as long as you break them in right and change their oil when you should. I dont think im going to mess with the stock governor on the engine but i did remove the governor off the axle. I think i will be putting 24" tires on mine so the gear ratio should be pretty good and i should be able to get 30mph out of it.

Re: 89' Clubcar DS 15hp Lifan and Lift Build
I've had a helluva time finding a new belt for my 88 CC (duromax clone) but may have found one. I emailed Gates Belts & they have a 15/16x41.9 belt that may do the trick. It doesn't look like I can order it direct........may have to get it through a local distributor.
I ordered a 4" A arm lift/tire-wheel combo from Rocky Top carts for $675 + $75 shipping.........best deal I could find. The wheels are 10", 8-spoke polished aluminum with 22"x11" Innovo AT tires....... |

I got mine from Autozone, free shipping to store.
I looked at the list I used and this is the closest I could find to what you needed: HP3025 41.422 long 0.962 wide Not exactly what you wanted, but maybe close enough? I don't know. Mine was about forty bucks. |

Re: 89' Clubcar DS 15hp Lifan and Lift Build
Most published lift kits are the lift and the added height of the tire. So one might put 22s on that lift 2" more than stock 18s, then lift the cart 3" to clear the tires, and call that a 5" lift.
A clone in a yamaha with no governor will run about 30gps or very close with 22s. Is a stock clone the 16hp do not like to rev any harder than the stock engine will. I wold go with 24s maybe larger if you can, though some of the larger ones are pricey. You might have to widen the front and run spacers in the rear with a real high lift to get some stability. Make sure you run offset wheels. |

Re: 89' Clubcar DS 15hp Lifan and Lift Build
well guys I pulled the trigger on rims and tires. I ended up ordering 10" steel 2+5 offset black rims and 24x11x10 ITP mudlite tires. My engine came on tues and is sitting in the garage ready to put in. I have been busy the last week deer hunting, but plan to continue my clone swap this coming tues. I still have to modify my engine cradle and drop it down a couple inches. Also have to extend my brake lines somehow to the rear. And still have to order a new belt cause im pretty sure I cannot use the stock one. anybody have any ideas on how to extend the brake lines?
