Default wanting to install gx390 in my yamaha g2

Im getting ready to install a gx390 in my yamaha g2. I have the engine it runs great and was free. Need some hints or tricks you guys may have.

Its currently a recoil start engine. Ive found the electric starter and charging conversion kit for this engine and I intend on using it.

My biggest question is the clutch, Ive read about an adapter to put on the crankshaft so that I can use my existing clutch. Does it work?

Will my existing clutch allow the gx390 to idle? If not I need some recommendations.

Im a mechanic and can weld and fabricate so changing things arent an issue.

This will be going in a Yamaha G2 its not used on the course and im not building it for performance. The cart is used by my parents to get around on the farm, My dad has MS and dosent walk well. with the honda engine being able to idle when stopped this will save me alot of battery maintenance and starter rebuilding lol. Any and all input will be greatly appreciated thanks in advance

i am starting this same project today when my engine arrives. i ordered the clutch adapter from cpp i can find you a link if you want( it took me hours to find the part i had to find a link on the forum) i ordered it and had it in hand a day and a half later. unfortunatly i dont believe its gonna let you idle very well. i could idle the stock engine low enough to not move but i suspect that was somewhere around 500 rpms. the cam in the clones have a compression release that is active at around 750 rpms so it'd be a bear to get it to idle that low without removing the release. you need a driver clutch with an idle bushing(dont get me wrong im not a clutch expert but i have been checking it out recently). cpp sells one or you could get a used 4 wheeler clutch and have it machined to work(i think its gonna be similar pricing unless you find a smokin deal so you may as well go brand new imo)

edit: i dont know why i had such a hard time finding it last time as i found it almost immediatly this time.

I was almost sure that it wasnt going to let it idle. And yes the honda engine like the clones has the compression release. Dont want to do away with that seems to hurt the starters feelings a little lol. Seen it done before. Anyway you gave me the answer I was looking for I definitely need a clutch with the idle bushing. Not gonna take one of my polaris rzr though lol. I wasnt sure if carts had them or not. Thanks for the reply Right now im rounding up all the info and parts. Looks like I need to go visit COMET about a clutch. I didnt want to kind of a pricy thing but that is what I need. And they make it to fit the honda gx390.

i believe that the 40 series will work but idk for sure(be wary not all "comet" clutches are the same(i will edit and include link to what that means as soon as i find it)). the one thing i could never pin down was what the size of belt the stock cart uses(i think 1 3/16 i would measure mine but its relatively old and i think its probably too worn to get accurate) i just got my engine today and i am using the stock clutch. my idea is to run the belt just a hair looser(like maybe 1/4" center to center) for now till i can get a different clutch.might work might not i will soon find out.

edit: here it is.... it doesnt get interesting until about halfway down the first page but it gives you some insight on the "quality" of cloned clutch parts. my point is its much safer to buy from a reputable dealer(speaking completely unbiased).

Yes I believe your correct. I think I will have to replace the driven clutch as well due to belt width. From what I understand the comet belts arent as wide as the yamaha Im still researching and looking for clutch options. You mentioned running your belt looser,,,May be a difference in our clutches but my belt has alot of slack in it from being worn and it still engages with simple cranking. Yes I no what you mean about the cloned parts and thanks for the thread post. I was lucky enough to have this HONDA engine laying around and still in perfect running order its off a pressure washer lol. Im a believer in research and doing a job once so that it lasts. When I fix something I do it right dont want to keep repairing. Thats why I started this thread, to get input from more experienced people than myself.

yes but i feel i need to clear something up here. when i was talking about clones i was talking specifically about clutches. while the hondas are without a doubt better quality i happen to think that the clones are decently built.

Oh I agree completely. Nothing against clones at all.

if u put the 200 rpm spring in the stock clutch it will allow the engine to idle ok ...tom at cpp put one in my club car clutch and it was the best thing ive done to it so far ...it also seems to help going up the hills
