Default Briggs smoking

Hey Guys... know its not a big block...but need a bit of direction. I have been given a melex with the 9hp vanguard in it. Got it running today but it smokes bad. Checked the compression and its well over 125...could it be a bad valve seal? Or is it most likely a busted ring on the piston? I know I probably need to pull the motor and Yank the head.......

judging by the post in your other thread i would say it is probably the rings(hard to say for sure) but typically leaky valve guides will only smoke when you start it untill it can burn the oil away.

edit: not always true really bad guides can leak more but it depends then upon crankcase pressure

Make sure your oil level is not overfilled. Also give it some running time if the cart has sat awhile and you just got it going.

Like said usually rings or valve, but a valve normally only leaks a little and while at rest. So it smokes at startup and once it burns up not much smoke. Rings smoke all the time usually more with higher rpm. Also check the crank case vent that it is not feeding oil into the carb or something strange. Check oil level, too much oil or gas leaking into the oil can cause smoking via flooding the rings or causing it to pump out someplace else like the crankcase vent. A lot of yamaha carts will fill the air box if you put too much oil in, where the crank vents to.
