Shaft length?
Well, 45 views and no replies on my other topic about a smokin briggs...maybe this one will get some answers LOL!
The engine thats in now has a 1x3 21/32 shaft. will a slightly longer shaft hurt anything as long as I offset the engine by the difference? Whats the most important thing in swapping an engine, and wanting to keep as many stock parts as possible other than shaft diameter? Found a 13hp lifan through Homedepot that I am considering ordering... |

Re: Shaft length?
Straight shafts don't matter...you can shim the back for alignment.
On you motor, more than likely it's the oil ring stuck or gone bad. Valve seals will typically smoke on start up and then be OK. |

Re: Shaft length?
Thanks for the reply! I'll check that oil ring! It starts up clean, then starts smoking. I found this engine that I may buy for it, shaft length is just a tad longer..
Cant post links yet...oops. its a lifan LF188FADQ at home depot... |

Re: Shaft length?
so if I buy that lifan engine, its shaft is a 1x3 31/64. The Briggs is 1/3 21/32. That makes the lifan .171875 shorter or 2/13ths if I did my math right. So in theory, I should be able to yank out my smoker, drop in the lifan with the spacer and bolt up my clutch?
Edit..Never mind! Found a lifan on ebay with the same length shaft...think I may order it tonight! |

Re: Shaft length?
I just bought a lifan clone from home depot online only 250 for a 15hp. It should not matter what the shaft length is because odds are the bolt pattern is different anyway so it is not going to bolt to the same holes. The clutch should be close to the block to be easier on the crank bearing, that is why any factory engine will be that way. Some people run them out more and it seems to be ok. It is not hard to cut the crank down anyway. If your cart is not lifted you could run the 13hp 390cc version it revs a little higher, the 420cc I got tends to have a little more torque for lifted carts. But the 13hp is not cheaper on HD right now for some reason. If I had the coin I'd buy a spare 420. Most carts have a taper clutch, you need the spacer from CPP to fit your stock clutch on a 1" shaft but then can use all the stock stuff on it.

Re: Shaft length?
I havent pulled the clutch from the engine yet, but it from what I have searched on the net it seems that this is a straight shaft.

Re: Shaft length?
You should be all set then. Like I said odds of a clone having the same mounting pattern are slim you would have to drill holes anyway. Long as you are not hitting something by moving the engine over a little you are fine with a small difference in length.

Re: Shaft length?
hehehe...we got the old briggs running enough so I could at least test the trans-axle and brakes. Trans-axle works better than the brakes! We fogged the neighborhood pretty good, guess we shouldn't have issues with mosquitoes for a few days LOL!
Once I get my replacement engine, I can pretty much gut the old wiring and use what comes with the new engine correct? Oh and I looked for those engines at Homedepot.com...all sold out! |
