carburator issue?
ok...so everything is mostly together, but i'm having carburator issues(?). before i put on exaust the motor was running.....a little rough, i thought due to old gas. the pulse pump was pumping, motor was starting easily. life was good. today i siphoned all of the old (bad?) gas out of the tank, drained the fuel lines and put new gas in. the only way i can get motor to start is to squirt a little gas in the carb. the motor will run till the 'squirt' is used up and then it dies. wtf? do i have a plugged jet? or something very simple? pump is pumping. spark is sparking. i don't think that it's flooding.
so where do i go from here? |

Re: carburator issue?
just watched several videos on you tube and talked to my master mechanic uncle in san diego. the diagnosis is varnish sticking the float etc. in the carb. try draining bowl, lightly tapping on bowl. add stabil to new gas. if this gets it great, if not take it apart and clean it. throw really really old gas out. if this doesn't work i'll pull carb and take it to buddie's shop. he just put a new front hub on my truck for 2 chickens and a watermellon.

Re: carburator issue?
ok....so old, really old gas is bad. how old? i'm thinking about 3 years old. i took the carb off, drained it, and took it apart. very, very clean. i blew out the jet, and the lines. put it back together, and back on motor. still not running. then i had a real duh moment and plugged the valve cover breather tube. ba bam. the pig runs. my stepson the 'teenage destroyer' and i bonded over adjusting the idle. it was a good night.

Re: carburator issue?
i had a lot of problems when i first got mine running the fuel pump was flooding the carb u could be having that trouble ...also if u are running thru the stock air box like i am it was way too rich with the stock jet ...im waiting on smaller jets right now will let u know ...my stock was an a 86 mm ..i ended up putting the pulse fitting in the valve cover and raising my fuel line level and it pumps pretty good now ..i just need to get the jetting sorted out

Re: carburator issue?
I run a gravity feed on my custom build. Avoids the nightmares I have read about with with pulse pumps. Also just had a 30mm Mikuni carb arrive in the mail. I did some research and found that for the 420cc clone @ 5000 rpms this was the optimal size recommendation. It may need some jetting to get right but for under $30 shipped brand new this is a cheap enough experiment. The quality is impressive compared to the complete piece of junk fitted to the clone. It comes with a nice three position choke which can easily be converted to cable operation and the throttle slide has a pre-load spring for automatic closing at no throttle along with a smooth linear action. The quality is night and day. Just need to hook up an inlet conversion and hopefully all will be good.

Re: carburator issue?
No Mike. The clone has offset studs and a slightly different spacing. A manifold will need to be made but no big deal. A longer intake runner should also give more torque due to the cooler air to the chamber. I have a friend who is a whiz at Aluminum welding and space is not a problem on my build. The inbuilt choke is a big help and will allow a free flowing air filter to be fitted, certainly has to be an improvement on the bath sponge job that comes as standard on the Duromax but hey, I wasn't expecting Honda levels of engineering for under $300 so dropping a few more bucks to gain driveability from a wood splitter motor is a no brainer. I'm looking for 18 / 20 reliable HP from my engine at around a max of 4500 / 5000 rpm in short bursts. Governor is gone and stronger valve springs are in. The former was free, the latter under $20. All in, I'm still under $400 and that's a quarter of the cost of a cheap replacement Kawasaki engine. reliability seems to be pretty good from what I've heard and this will be my 5th clone build with the oldest at three years and still running like a raped ape. Next time I will Likely go with one of Toms (CPP) drop in vee twin systems but thus far I have had a ball with these little engines. Cheap as chips, chirp the tires and a great replacement for knackered golf course carts which is my speciality. Others are more specialised in trail riding rigs so a chat with those folks might be in order but for me and my golf course people the clone Duromax has proved to be a worthy and cheap unit. Good luck with your build and if you need any advice just let me know if you don't find the answers in these pages. Always glad to help. FC. |
