Re: clone engine capable of charging battery?
Most clones have a 3 amp charging system. So no it won't charge the battery completely with just the engine only running. People have to charge theirs every so often to top them off. The 2 most common solutions is to run that factory starter/gen on your cart but if you don't have one for some reason get a good ol' Chevy 65amp alternator and run anything you want.

Re: clone engine capable of charging battery?
Don't see why not. Is the size because of the space or are you thinking smaller means it will spin easier? Any automotive ones can have the pulley swapped to change the drive ratio to make it really easy to spin. As for bike alts from what I have seen they are more of a direct drive on the newer ones and older ones charge from the magneto. Newer ones you'd have to build a mount with more detail then the old automotive ones.

Re: clone engine capable of charging battery?
Most motorcycle alternators run off the crankshaft with a stationary armature mounted to the case and a rotor that rotates with the crank. Don't think it's possible to put this type setup on a clone motor.

Re: clone engine capable of charging battery?
The honda parts are expensive to make it charge more, iirc you have to get a different flywheel also. If you found a used honda that would be best. I was told you can add another coil under the flywheel and make it 6A is all you can do. For more power best to use the stock gen, I am sure you can hook it up just for charging somehow and not starting if you need to....or use an automotive alternator that will charge much more than the 15A the gen does. Best to get one wire alt or other simple to connect unit. The hard part will be mounting a pulley if you don't have one on the clutch.

Re: clone engine capable of charging battery?
I was told the electric start clones are set up for charging an external battery. Ive had my motor in for a little more than a month and have not had to charge it yet. I have only ran the lights for an hour or so at a time, and still havent got the radio hooked up yet. But so far so good.

Re: clone engine capable of charging battery?
You can buy an extra coil for like $5 and wire it in with the existing coild to make a 6 amp which should keep it charged.
