Default DuraMax replacing Vanguard

Have an old Husky Haulmaster that came with a 16hp Vanguard. Just pulled the second one out. 1st one ran short of oil, installed used 18hp our of Toro greens mower. Towo had electric fuel pump, so installed that way. Always had trouble keeping it running, flooding, fouling plugs etc. Finally stumbled on a briggs pub that said the max fuel pressure s/b 1.5 psi. Sure enough the electric pump said 5.5 to 9 psi. Bought and installed a fuel pressue regulator and adjusted to 1.5. Guess it's too late, nott much compression and backfiring through carb. Don't want any more Vanguards, so decided on the 16hp Dura Max. May not be as much torque asthe Vtwin, but only use the cart here on the farm, so should be OK.
Can I run the Duramax with the elctric pump and press regulator at 1.5psi? I don't have enough vertical room to use the factory mounted tank. Why does everybody tear these engines down and kill the governor? Can anybody post a pix of how they rigged a throttle control leaving the governor installed (not necessarilly hooked up)?

If you hook up the throttle thru the govenor it will be governed,Unless you remove the actual govenor internally,Leave the shaft thru the block that the linkage hooks to and then you can run your throttle-linkage thru that. You can use the electric-pump with regulator,or switch to a Pulse-Pump(Vacuum).Hope this helps.

Yes they need low pressure also. Use that regulator or get a gokart pulse pump and run it off the valve cover area is best. They have a lot of torque if you get the 420cc version, they don't rev out as well but that is only top speed issue really. Be really careful about leaving that shaft in there as I think it can hit the crank, or it looked like it when I took mine out. You could cut it shorter of course, I tapped the hole and put a 1/8 npt plug in it. The throttle you can hook up about any way you want.

Most people want some speed out of carts, thus they take governors off for more rpm run out...more top speed. I can get about 30gps with no governor on stock G9 engine or a clone in a stock G9. With a cheap rev kit a vanny will go faster, the clones need some work to rev higher. They can be built up to 30hp but it will cost you.

I got the duramax clone in today, installed the electricals, added oil and gas, and it runs. On to the next step. I'd sure like to see some pix of throttle and choke hookups. If anyone needs anything off the old Vanguard, it's up for grabs.

You know i broke the handle off the choke before I ever got the engine set down in the hole. Have to redrill new mounting holes, looks like the clutch is going to line up but need a longer flat belt. Anybody got any good suggesttions as to where to buy a belt, and how to measure it?

where are you located ?

The throttle hook up is pretty simple for most, just use your throttle cable, I got a cable nut from the hardware store, and ran it up close to the carb and hooked it up, then made the housing/sheath stable somehow..

You would probably be real happy running a pulse pump between your fuel tank and the engine, it uses the engine crankcase pressure to push it, you can get them at virtually any lawn mower shop..

I'm in Pomona Park, about 70 miles s of Jax. I just set the engine in today, and made a template so I can drill new mounting holes. Just looking to see what others had done on throttle and choke. Broke the choke plastic arm off already.

Angry Re: DuraMax replacing Vanguard

I'm at a stanstill!!! With the engine setting in place, I have 20" c/l to c/l on the shafts. This would require a 58" belt, as I measure it. Using the Comet series 40 drive system that came on the utv, and it uses a 7/8" top width belt. Can't find anything even close. I can move the engine back maybe 2" more, any further and the valve cover hits the transaxle mount. The only option I can think of is to use a jackshaft belt driven off the clutch, then a chain drive to the transaxle, but that looks like a tremendous amt of work. Anybody got any good ideas? Anybody have any idea where to find a long belt, or have one made?

You won't have any problem finding a belt..

I am interested in the whole motor, I am not going to use PM's I am in Florida, and will be going to Georgia toward Jax next weekend.
I will be coming back through to Melbourne... let me know if you have a price in mind for it.

I ended up using a belt for an 88 model ex go..
There is a method to measuring them, I guess you found that..but if you look on the carts parts supply places on line, most of the sponsors here, all have a wide selection of belts.
Also, NAPA carries most of them..

If you do a search in this forum for Drive Belt Measurement, or even do a google search for drive belt measurement on golf carts, it will lead you back here to the info you need..Sry I don't have the link handy, but it is easy to find it..one of the more knowledgeable people on here posted the formula ..with that, you can find the belt you need.
