Recent engine change to the Vanguard 23. Now every time I start the engine, the cart wants to TAKE OFF! Only for a few seconds, then the drive clutch normaly releases. It is just barley catching, however with this enigne, its still more than the breakes can overcome. This is dangerous, please help.

Re: cart jumps on start up HELP!!!
Its either in the primary clutch (on engine) or you have too short a belt/engine too far from trans. Note a new belt can do this for a bit until it wears in, new belts are sticky. What clutch is on the engine?

Re: cart jumps on start up HELP!!!
Its the clutch that came on the engine from CCP. Tom did tell me that the belt would "break in" but this is very dangerous. the cart hit the front of the house the second day. only seems to do it on cold starts.

Re: cart jumps on start up HELP!!!
If the belt is new you should go down some dusty areas and see if that helps, put some miles on it. Otherwise you can call CPP, they are nice to deal with. I usually lock the brake when I park the cart, that should keep it stopped. If not I'd say something might be wrong with it.

Re: cart jumps on start up HELP!!!
I had the same problem when I installed a 16Hp in a club car. The brakes failed at idle speeds and the cart climbed the fence and threw me off even with me pressing the brakes. I solve the problem doing three things. Idle the motor so slow it is loping which should keep the clutch from hooking up, add a second spring to keep carb it in slow mode at start up, and last run a loose belt.
My carb from the factory came with a spring to hold the carb wide open till the governor can slow down the motor. By adding a light spring to keep the butter fly closed you should not get the sudden burst of speed at start up. This was for a Duromax 16HP I do not know if your brand of motor holds the butter fly open or closed when not running. Also from the factory the motors come so lean they do not want to idle slow. The factory breaks off the air idle screw so it can not be turned. You can however adjust this screw for a better idle if you can find a way to hack saw a new slot and heat up the body around the screw to loosen the heat release lock tight they use. (a half a turn out on the idle screw worked for me) This will have to be done with the carb off of the motor. You can also drill out you idle jet to the next size for better slow speed idle. I have been able to slow my idle down enough that with the transmission in gear and no brakes applied the cart does not move. The motor now sounds something like a Harley at idle. With bigger motors in the cart it is a good idea to always keep the brakes locked up at start up, start up the motor in neutral till it warms up, and last limit who you let drive your cart. |
