Predator flywheel
Has anyone had any issues with the flywheel on their Predator motors after modifying them? Been told that you need to run an aluminium flywheel. Just curious if anyone has had issues before I drop $195 for a new one.

Re: Predator flywheel
The gokart guys don't want to be racing next to you (with no protection or guards) when they go boom, on the engines where it can happen. The clones have done it at 6K and over. Given gokart guys run full rpm all the way down straights/etc on every lap unlike most golf carts/buggies would be used. I built mine to hit 6K or at least 5500, I like to wind it up but I never keep it pegged, never ever, I really have no need to its just for fun. The stock cam can hardly get that high in a gokart that weighs nothing let alone a golf cart. I have seen them over 5500 in a golf cart down the road a ways.
So it depends on what rpm you plan to run it at, remember you have to clutch it there too. If I got a cam it would be the torque cam that stays under 6k, have peak torque at 4K or something. If you go gonzo good idea to get a flywheel. However you can use other flywheels like the animal wheels off the briggs engine, they recut the taper to fit clones. Some even go far as to use the gx200 little wheels. This does result in other issues like starting, they turn over harder with less weight on the flywheel. You have to make a bracket or whatever to fit the ignition magneto down to a smaller flywheel, if you use a smaller one and not the ARC/etc replacements. But they do run with more snap with less weight, no doubt about that. Some of the clones its just the magnet that falls out and breaks off the coil which goes flying at 100mph inside there. Mine has a screw in it as well as epoxy, but a guy told me they can come off anyway. I guess the screw is made of fake metal or something (?), but centrifugal force does raise the force on a curve (X squared or something) as rpm increases. I had thought they (earlier engines) did not have a screw or that guy was mistaken, I never did get a good answer about that. I was told if you find a stock honda flywheel they are ok for 6K rpm. The clones had problems in their early days and many were taken care of eventually, it can be hard to tell what is true now or not. But hey you don't want a wheel to go boom either and it is fairly heavy. Mine is right next to the fuel tank, but does have my 1/8th" plate over it with my throttle linkages on it. I expect to see very few seconds at 6K rpm if any. |

Re: Predator flywheel
Thanks Sho. I'm looking at putting a cam in mine and the cam's only good to 6k. Don't plan on running it that high, probably wont get close. Just don't want to buy a new flywheel if I don't have too.

If you remove the governor, the motor obviously revs to much higher RPMs. This can basically turn your flywheel into a shrapnel bomb. Our it's recommended that if your going to run high RPMs you should replace it with the aluminum racing flywheel.

Re: Predator flywheel
Ouch...$195. I'm glad I'm running the 212 clone. Mine was only $99. I bought it for peace of mind although it's advertised to be much lighter than the factory it felt no difference in weight just by picking it up.

Re: Predator flywheel
Wish I could get one that cheap. I know that it's probably a good investment just hate to have to spend $195 bucks on a flywheel.

Re: Predator flywheel
Some of the other wheels are laying around like the animal wheel, or so some guys say, just need to machine the taper and can use one. But you still have to figure out how to start it up, I wonder about rigging dual generators lol as I would have no way to start it in the cart. The gokart guys all use the electric start carts, or the smaller ones you can recoil them if you do it right.

Re: Predator flywheel
Leave it alone and save your money! Ive been beating the crap out of both of my clones with the stock rod and flywheel, well over 6K for extended periods of time without issue.
If the magnets in your flywheel are bolted on...youre fine for whatever you can throw at it on the stock cam. |
