Default Predator 420 air filter adequate?

I converted my electric club car to gas using a new 420cc predator engine from hf. It seems they have changed the air box and filter design since I last did one of these swaps a few years ago. I am not a fan of the new air filter at all and I am concerned it will not provide adequate protection off road.

The hf clone engines use to come with a standard air filter like this that was attached to a rod with a wing nut.

The new engines they make now dont come with a normal air filter, instead it is a piece of thin foam like a prefilter roughly cut to the shape of the air box and it sets inside the air box. There are voids between the airbox and the filter where debris can pass through to the carb unfiltered.

What have others done with this setup? Is there a way to convert to a traditional air filter?

The oval one is the honda hurricane design, nice filter. The other is some cheap thing only to be used in relatively clean environments if you ask me....maybe on a pressure washer for example that is unlikely to be in dirty/dust conditions. The carolstream I got had that foam thing, tossed it and made a box with a hose to an automotive filter box. I had the oval one on my home depot clone, but too high so I ran a hose off it to a car filter box just like the other one.

You can get kits with a spacer that mounts to the carb, then you put a K&N type motorcycle filter on it. Or you can put a hose on them to some other filter. The spacer makes it larger diameter than the carb. I think NR racing has one for example you can get the spacer or kit with filter too. I piped my airbox to the front of the cart on top of it, because the engine compartment is so dirty and hot. I ride in a lot of dirt/sand/dust.

Problem I have is the yamaha G9 the frame and shock are very close to the filter and carb, not much room for anything.

Same way with my electric ds frame there is limited space. That's a really great idea to run a hose from the carb to a remote mounted airbox.

Problem with the new style air box is they only rely on the plastic cover to clip onto the air box case instead of it being held on with a wing nut like they use to. Based on my off road adventure this weekend, I can say the new way is not very effective. The air box cover and air filter fell off 3 times. Once was at the bottom of a mountain and when we reached the summit I discovered we drove the enitire dusty trail up with no air box cover or air filter!

The very first mod to these engines most people do is a nice K&N filter. Problem. Fixed!

Yeah out there in clear NV! I can ride for 5min and open the seat and everything is brown with dust when its dry here, no way will I have an airbox intake under there. Other areas you will not need it. The stock G9 box has multiple dust traps in it. I may have to mod my pipe in front though it does make some engine intake noise.
