Default Club Car Top Speed?

I have a 93 cc ds that i recently upgraded to a 420cc hf motor. I upgraded motor due to not enought top speed and wanted more low end power. I used the factory air box and modified the factory exhaust to fit. I also used factory s/g system. I have upgraded drive and driven clutches. The new motor runs great and i got alot more low end power but I dont think I gained anymore top end speed. I gps it at 15 mph after listening to people on hear I think I should be alot faster. I am running 23" tires and I did leave the gov in place on motor for now. Does anyone have any ideas on why im slow or is this normal?

If the goverened speed is the same as your old engine it wont have any higher top speed than your factory engine, you will just get there faster. I would get a strobe and see what your governed speed is. I imagine it is somewhere around 3600 rpm. I have never worked with them but there should be a way to increase the top speed. You should be able to take it to 4k without hurting anything. I know my pioneer with a stock fe350 probably hits the rpm limiter around 20 mph.

Hi JoeMama,

Yeah, the governor is preventing you from going faster. Pull the governor and then you will get a higher top end speed. Valve float will likely limit you with the gov removed.

I have half of your motor (I have the 212cc HF, governor removed) and I get 23mph with just me on the cart, so I would imagine you should be able to get to at least that. But like anything else, it depends on the setup and gearing.

Good luck.

You need to take the side case off the block and remove or break off the governor gear, remove the governor shaft/arm. Tap the hole with a 3/8 and put a set screw or bolt in it with some sealer or teflon tape to plug it. Lay engine on the side to do it the crank and all will stay in there. May need new gasket since you ran it. Use blue loctite on the bolts. I did this before I ever ran mine. Then buy a set of HD springs for the valves and get the spring retainer for the exhaust side it has the button for the valve, so you can have those on both valves. Springs are like $10 plus shipping. Then you are set to run at least 5500 but your airbox and muffler may slow you at higher rpm, may be restrictive. Figure 9.5hp stock and 15hp clone 420, you need near 50% more air through the engine. You should be able to adjust the governor to 4-4500 right now it will run around 5K before it floats in my experience. In a yamaha that is 31mph on 22s. I did some other things to one and still stock in the block it runs 37mph on 22s. The yamaha cvt does do a .9 ratio overdrive so its about 11:1 final ratio through the cvt and trans (13:1 itself).
