Sizing the Manton pushrods, Procedure?
Manton "Cut-To-Length" HD Chromoly Pushrods
I just picked these up for my VC440, anyone know the correct procedure for sizing the pushrods? And how should I cut them? The ends are a press in fit, do I need to take them to a machine shop? I'm pretty savvy with mechanics, I've just never made my own pushrods. I'm sure it's not complicated, but I only have one shot at this, I want to get it right. Anyone do this yet? |

Re: Sizing the Manton pushrods, Procedure?
A buddy and I did our engines the same day at my house, Manton pushrods, springs, isolators and removed the governor from his Duromax. We did his first( cut to the same length as stock) and everything went perfect. Then did mine on the 440, nothing went right!!!!
The ends wouldn't push into the rods so they ended to long which made it so the stud locknuts didn't have enough stud to tighten down!!!!! Ordered new pushrods and a spacer from Geoff (somebody else has had this problem if they already had spacers) and started over , same method and worked perfect. Go figure!!!! I think someone did a post on here just recently about this. |

Re: Sizing the Manton pushrods, Procedure?
Yeah, several posts there, but no real procedure. There was one post said to use "Dykam" what the heck is that? Not understanding his post. But there has to be a way to know how long to make them, right?
I'm guessing that I can't use the stock pushrods as a guide because I'm changing to 1.3 rockers. So do I just mock it all up with the old pushrods and mark them to the length I need, then cut the new ones at that length? I talked to Geoff about it when before I ordered the parts, but I wasn't taking notes, LOL. Maybe he'll chime in today? |

Re: Sizing the Manton pushrods, Procedure?
The dykem is used on the tip of the valve where the rocker arm push the valve down. As you change the length of the push rod, it changes where the rocker arm pushes on the valve thru it's range of motion. You want the rocker arm to push directly in the middle of the valve stem tip thru it's whole range. Basically dab some on the valve, install your OLD pushrod, turn the engine over by hand and see where it is worn off. If it's right in the middle, that is the length push rod you need. Off to the inside, then they need to be longer, towards the outside (side farthest away from the pushrod) they need to be shorter.

I even tried to search "Dykam", came up with nothing. Thanks for the info.

I think you might be able to use a magic marker or something similar. Do a test first before final try..

Re: Sizing the Manton pushrods, Procedure?
correct, usually you buy an adjustable length push rod, figure out the length & then cut the new ones to the proper size. Cut as little as possible, you can always go shorter LOL
