Re: wiring ignition to turn off engine
if you didnt purchase a magneto type ign. switch, you will need a aux. 5 terminal relay to kill the clone magneto. Do you have start circuit working now? What year cc do you have? Where in oregon do you live?

Re: wiring ignition to turn off engine
If you use the stock gen to start and charge and can't turn it off, and your stock engine had a mag ignition, you can use the stock kill wire to kill the clone. If your stock engine had a 12v powered ignition like my G9 you can use a bosch type 5 pin relay ($3 on amazon, same for plug with pigtail) to kill the engine with the pedal....actually you wire it to let the engine run when pedal is down and it grounds the kill wire any other time. I've posted that before. If you don't use the gen and want it like a (riding) lawnmower, you need a B&S (or outboard) type key that grounds on 'off' to kill it. You could use a car type key with the relay I guess, car type are 12v power to the ignition to run...the 'on' will supply 12v.

Re: wiring ignition to turn off engine
jeffrun, what is a magneto ignition?
I got it to turn off with a switch to the clone kill wire but I would like it to kill when I turn off the key so I don't have an extra step. Is this possible? I live about 30 minutes south of Portland outside of Hubbard. Where in Wa do you live? Go Ducks!!! |

Re: wiring ignition to turn off engine
Mag is a coil on the flywheel that needs no power to run, push mowers all have them and most single small engines, lot of twins do. If you put 12v to the kill wire from them you can trash them instantly. The kill wire is grounded to kill the ignition on a magneto style ignition coil. Most 12v powered ignition engines the coil (that the plug wire goes to) is not on the flywheel edge its located someplace outside the engine. Golf carts used both depending on what model, most small lawn engines use magneto it is simple and reliable....though they do have an electronic version now it looks the same and does not use outside power.
If your key powers up 12v when you turn it on, then get a relay and you can have the relay ground the clone to kill it. Wire the relay to activate from the key, the other side of the relay to ground the clone when key is off. A 4 pin relay can't do this you need the normally closed pin so it grounds when relay is not powered. However I don't know offhand how CC keys are wired without looking at one. Some gas CC used mag ignition engines and would have a kill wire in there someplace. |

Re: wiring ignition to turn off engine
hi hamy,
Sho explained the magneto system and how it works, thats what your vc440 has for firing the spark plugs. The relay provides a ground to kill motor when you switch ign, sw. to the off position, so it will act like a normal ign, switch to kill motor. Without the relay ,your ign. switch has no ground in the off position. Are you going to use s.g for starting and charging? I will give you connections to the relay when you get it mounted. I live in the tri-cities area in washjngton...go seahawks |

Re: wiring ignition to turn off engine
I am using the starter generator. What type of relay do I need? Can I get one at a typical auto parts store? Remember I'm not using the factory ignition, don't know of this will matter or not.

Re: wiring ignition to turn off engine
yes, tell them you need a 5 terminal, SPDT aux. relay. They use these on lighting systems like this..link below.
