420 Predator engine clutch questions.
Hi everybody,
I have a Yamaha G22E cart, lifted 6 inches with a really nice diamond plate bed on the back. I got it super cheap, and it's in pretty good shape except for the engine in it has top end problems.. was apparently knocking pretty bad and died. When I got this cart, I bought it and another yamaha cart for $100 and managed to sell the non lifted broken cart for almost $300 to a neighbor's friend. So.. took the money down to Harbor Freight and got one of their 13 hp Predators with the electric start. I did not know if the yamaha engine had a straight or tapered shaft when i did all this, but was hoping it would be the same. Disapointment ensued when I got the clutch off. The questions I have stem from the fact I am really reluctant to cut the shaft off a brand new engine. #1, I bought the warranty, and am pretty sure even the clueless people working at my local stores would red flag that cut shaft. and #2, I am not sure if that engine is going to be exactly what I want long term in that cart and I'd like to be able to re-use it on another project if I find something bigger/better later. So.. That cart uses an 1-1/4 inch wide belt. 10-1/2 between centers for a belt length. I know there are a few clutches out there that will fit what I have here, but they are in the $250-$ 350 range, which goes against my doing more with less personality. I found a few cheaper clutches, like 100 but they all run narrower belts than 1 1/4. I didnt want to change my driven out too, because then I could have just spent the big bucks on the driver. I had an idea of using the power accessory bolt pattern around the engine shaft to cut a plate to mount up a 4 bolt flange bearing on standoffs to support the shaft, then use the shaft adapter and the stock clutch. That way it would support the longer arm created by the stock clutch hanging way off the end. I would of course have to mount the engine farther to the right side to compensate for the 2 or 3 inches of shaft length, but I can remove or relocate the gas tank to the other side and put the battery in where the tank used to be in the now smaller space. I have a plasma cutter and good mig welder, so cutting out the brackets would not be an issue, the flange bearings are very cheap, like 10 bucks... and the adapter is about $50. Much cheaper than a new clutch and i don't have to chop my shaft off. The picture I've drawn is terrible, I could probably do better by hand but i used paint on my computer to just get a visualization out there. What do you think? |

Re: 420 Predator engine clutch questions.
Well, you could do that. But you could also just use a spacer between the crank and the adapter. The shaft is 1", so you'd just need spacer's that are 1" inside diameter. I actually used a 1/4" thick washer I found in my garage. It solved my problem. You would just need more washers. Go to your local hardware store and look, you might find some flat washers with the I.d. you need. Accomplishes the same thing, just more low tech.

I've also seen stuff like this at Tractor Supply. If it's too long, just cut to length, use a grinder to get it flat. Not machinework, but it works.
Here it is, it's called a shaft collar, used on farm equipment. http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/stor...-dia-pack-of-2 |

Re: 420 Predator engine clutch questions.
Hey guys.. I guess I didn't fully explain what I was trying to accomplish. My main concern was relieving the stress on the crankshaft bearings on the engine case, so that I would not have to shorten the shaft. Adding two inches of length is essentially doubling the load on the outside bearing.
Because the stock clutch only uses 1 1/2 inches of the shaft..the rest of its width is hanging off the end of the shaft. That is a very long lever, which the belt will use as a lever like a crowbar to press on the bearings. I know i can use spacers to take up the space between the clutch and shoulder..but it would still be hanging out there. By the way.. that picture I posted.. the blue square would be the flange bearing like this: http://www.surpluscenter.com/Power-T...205-16-4-C.axd |

You could buy a 1" straight-bore clutch, and slide it on.You may have to trim the crank, but its' a lot less work than what you are trying to do,and it will fit better in the cart.Hope this helps.

I haven't a clue on how to do what you are looking for but I can tell you that I think you are making way more work out of it. Just cut the shaft and get on with it! |

Re: 420 Predator engine clutch questions.
Is the issue of blowing the bearings really that much of a concern? When you use this motor to power some other type of farm equipment, it usually has a pulley mounted to the far end of the shaft, right? The pressures would be similar.
Also, you mentioned you weren't sure on the engine being what you would want long term. Well, Vegas Carts (a sponsor here) sells a 440cc for $400 (I think) that makes a lot more power with a lot of engine upgrades already installed... It's worth a look if you think you have questions about the HF engine. |

Re: 420 Predator engine clutch questions.
I would not worry about sticking the clutch on the end unless you are going to mod the engine for high rpm. Find some kind of tube to space it out. If you keep the gen start you can remove the recoil and buy/make a flat screen for the flywheel intake, to get more room there.

Re: 420 Predator engine clutch questions.
Hey Slonomo... thanks. By the way.. Time I got plenty of. Money, not so much.
Hey Sho305 I do plan on playing with this engine some to figure out what I can get out of it. But just want it reliable long term. I usually try to think a few stages ahead so I don't have to go backwards later. I have several hobbies that sometimes work together.. I have a hobby scale aluminum foundry ... no more than 10 lbs melted at one time, that I do sand castings. I'm looking at making some components for a few projects, this cart being one of them. |
