Default Prepping for the 460 Vegas Clone

Ok, I ordered the complete clone install kit from Vegas Carts to include the new 460 Clone engine. Started the prep a couple of days ago. As I already removed the engine from my cart, (a 1995 EZGO Medalist) The front and rear engine mount came out easy. just unbolt and remove. The front motor mount bracket was a different story. The left outside bolt was no problem, but the inside bolt was up against the accelerator pedal box, and I could not figure out how to drop that down at least not very easy as it is riveted to the floor board. I called Vegas Carts and they said, no, do not remove the pedal box. Just wedge a screwdriver in behind it to hold the bolt head and remove the nut.

Well, that may work on a newer cart, but one like mine that has sat most of its life outside in Florida, that bolt was pretty much corroded on. Try as I might, I could not get enough bite on that bolt head with a screwdriver to turn the nut.

After a frustrating two hours or so, I finally got a cheap Harbor Freight Chinese 9/16 wench (did not wish to sacrifice a Snap On) and ground it down on a grinder until it was thin enough to slip between the frame and the pedal box. The nut finally broke free and I was able to remove the bracket.

Now just waiting for Vegas Carts to get the kit to me so I can install it.

I will attempt to add some pictures if I can figure out how to do it.

Looking forward to seeing your progress. I will be doing something similar to a '92 Marathon, but will have to fabricate the motor mount, as Geoff tells me it is completely different from the Medalist and subsequent models.

That's not that rusty. Maybe that one bolt was, but that frame looks pretty clean. Nice build.

Yeah my 95 cart is a metal bodied cart like yours but same shape as the newer glass bodied carts. The running gear is the same as the newer carts though, so the adapter mounts, etc fit.

OK, got word that my EZGO Vegas Cart install kit will be here tomorrow, although the 460 won't be here til after the 1st of the month.

Figured I would do a little more prepping. I removed the axle governor and associated hardware. Apparently, you have to cut the shaft off flush with the pumpkin for motor clearance. Will do that tomorrow.

Hopefully, I will have all the starter adapter, mount and associated hardware installed by the time my motor ships.

I was going to go stock, but what to hell, in for a dime in for a dollar. I ordered that 460 with the milled, ported, and polished head, the advance key, heavy valve springs, etc. Geoff is going to build the motor for me so I don't screw it up. Gonna stay with the stock cam for now. Geoff says if I want this motor to last any time at all I have to run 91 octane or better in it. As I live in an Airport Community, I have access to Avegas (100 LL) and that's what I will be running it on . I siphoned all the UL gas out of the tank today and put it in my lawn tractor.

Here is another pick,

The motor was 269 or 279. 115 for the head work; I made some trades for a new EZGO clutch I had for the comet clutch so i did not have to do any machine work on the shaft. I will have about 1300 in the build when I am done. Later on I might do a mild cam for another 159. I did not do the cam at this time because I don't want to effect the drivability of the cart. I want it to be as reliable as a stock cart as it can be.

I believe all of the 460 Vegas clones have the hemi head.

Find out what rod is in it, most clones you need a good rod with a cam. The stock clones don't live well at 6K and above the rod does not oil well.....is what I read on the gokart sites. The stock cam will not get there.

Octane depends on compression ratio, I don't know what the hemi head has. I had my 420 cut and can still run regular but it will knock at really low rpm when hot, like if I slow down and gas it the stock clutch does not shift up fast enough. With the umax spring it stopped doing it now.
