big block governor question
Hello this is my first post I love this site. I have a yamaha G9 that unfortunately blew up last weekend. Now i have to put a clone in dang it. my question is if i should remove the engine governor. I do a lot of trail riding so i want the torque but not the speed as my wife and son also drive this cart. I have searched but cant find much info on here about speeds. I would like to know approximate top speeds with and without the governor. My trans governor is removed also. any help would be appreciated thank you

Re: big block governor question
The governor should limit it to 3600 rpm. I think the final ratio on a brand new yamaha was 11:1, read that somewhere. Sounds about right but no idea if it is accurate or not. So then the last two things you need are tire diameter and this link:
http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/speed-calculator.php There may be some other issues in the cart too that cause drag, like alignment, underinflated tires, etc. These will make it harder to reach your theoretical maximum. My cart is an old EZGO with stock suspension and reaches 23mph. It's a little unnerving at 23. If you are stock suspension/breaks/steering i would not recommend going faster than that. Happy trails! |

Re: big block governor question
Put a clone in a G9 it will go very close to the same speed it goes now. If you do some mods to the engine like HD springs and timing key/etc it will go a little faster.....this without a governor. If you keep the cart governor on it you will see no change other than it having more power so it gets up to speed much quicker. I would not recommend you use the clone governor as the clutches don't really shift right, but it would keep speeds down some maybe mid 20s with 22 tires, and it will not have full power because 3600 is not enough for the clutches to shift fully. The cart governor is adjustable, and governs only top speed. You can adjust the throttle to not open all the way to cut full power produced if you really wanted to with or without the cart governor.

My recommendation is to get the HD springs, it will rev much better. For that reason alone it's worth the price to get the VC440. It has better compression and a better carb and a rev kit installed. 20hp out of the box. http://www.vegascarts.com/product-p/vrx44.htm Speed will be in the 30mph range with 12:1 gears and 18" tires. Bigger tires will go faster. You will get up to speed much quicker than stock. Make sure your brakes are good! Stock speed would have been in the 20mph range. |

Re: big block governor question
Thanks for everyones replies. i was thinking about taking out the gov. and limiting my throttle cable. but wouldnt that keep the engine from reaching max rpm also. i really dont want to use the cart gov. but my wife is making me keep it at stock speeds. noise will also be an issue as she dont want it to sound like a lawnmower going down the road. it does have a 7" lift and 22" tires now so it was a little faster than stock. Im going with the duromax without elect. start and tips or build threads would be appreciated thank you

sho305 has some good threads: http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/searc...&starteronly=1 Who's to say what stock speed is.... Ditch the rear end governor. it's going to cause you too much trouble. You can adjust the governor on the engine bu using one of the other 2 spring holes to get a lower max rpm. |

Re: big block governor question
My G9 would gps at 28 on dirt level road and 30 on pavement with 22 tires and 14psi in the rears so they were somewhat hard, flat out with the stock engine. Clone in same model G9 cart same tires runs 31 gps on dirt likely same on pavement since it was not power keeping it down on dirt, it was valve float. It has car muffler and car airbox and rejet is all otherwise stock 420 clone. All these with all governors removed. My G9 now with 420 clone and timing key, cut/ported head/HD springs and 1.3 rockers, etc, has run 37 gps on pavement flat out. Stock cam and block, car based airbox and exhaust its in my build thread. The clone does have a lot more power it will spin the tires and spin up hills and get up to max speed in much shorter distance. I don't know if my clone is much faster up to 30 mph than the stock one not been able to race them, but the bottom end up to 20mph is not much different. Mine will come on harder at say 25mph and better as the rpm sky out where the HD springs and other mods help it rev more. However if I can get my new clutch on it might help it rev more at lower speeds and get more power, both these carts have stock CVT aside from cut sheaves and mine now has a umax spring but it helps it be more responsive more than anything. The stock clone would run 27gps with the stock engine it used to have, with the cart governor working and turned all the way up, with same 22 tires (trailpro) as both carts have. It would break a throttle cable now and then, but maybe every couple years or longer. That is the problem with keeping the governor if you want to go faster, it works fine at lower speeds. Note these speeds with 22s you can subtract about 8mph if you have 18s. I would not recommend running the clone or stock engine at ungoverned high rpm all the time with 18s as it puts no load on them, unless you modify the clone properly. I ran the stock G9 with no governor for a decade or something with 22s and no harm done. But I never went faster than it would go on the level, I never hammered it down a big hill for higher speeds.

Re: big block governor question
Thanks for the info sho. Is your clones loud with the car mufflers. I have read that the stock clone muffler is not as loud as a car muffler but that dont make sense to me. seems the car would be quieter. also could someone post a link to sho's build thread. i have found some build threads but not sure if i have the rite one. Thanks all
