Default club car clone swap - clutch question

So i just picked up a club car DS with a 16hp honda clone, and comet 500 series torque converter. However, the way its set up now, it cannot change gears without completely shutting down the cart, and motor is always running even when not on the gas.

Can this setup be adjusted to change gears while on, or be modified to run like a stock setup by only running when gas is pushed?

Any help is appreciated, Thank you.

Your belt is too tight. In order to have the belt "slip" in the clutch there must be a little slack. Loosen it up some and try it. Also, run the idle down as far as you can, right before it stalls.

If it uses the stock clone starter like a lawnmower then you can't do pedal start, you need the cart generator on there to do it then the pedal switch runs the solenoid that powers the gen. The main issue is if the belt is dragging on the primary it will not shift, because the cart trans is made to have it stop to shift. So you can loosen the belt like Slo says (move engine closer to trans or get a longer belt, but note it will not shift right without the proper distance between clutches and proper belt size to match), check the alignment it will drag if engine is angled or off center, get a more narrow belt, is right size belt being used, can you shim the clutch for a different width belt (wider so it stops dragging, as some aftermarket clutches you can change size), or you can buy a new clutch with the center roller the belt sits on they work really well. You could also fabricate a brake pad against the secondary to apply when you shift if it is just dragging some. Also note a new belt will drag more the rubber is sticky, some dust and break-in will calm it down after a bit.
