Some trans like a GC don't like the input (the secondary) to turn when it shifts, or it turns then it grinds. This is in the primary, primary is dragging on the belt. Could be from an alignment issue or belt is too short or clutch not adjusted wide enough. Some clutches have a roller in the center the belt can lay on and not turn/drag. But a new belt will drag they are sticky until they wear in. Many UTV actually have a centrifugal clutch inside or behind the primary so the primary does not turn at idle. Then they tighten the belt for a lower first 'gear' ratio and engage it right at the bottom of the primary.

How can I adjust the clutch "wider"? Im new to the clutches and how they operate!

I have the comet 780 clutch from VegasCarts, bought it when I got the engine.

Nevermind, I looked around online and found that info, now I just gotta tune the clutch a bit more to make it a bit easier to shift I think.

Back from the DEAD. Anyone know of a clutch option that is more like a UTV clutch and will allow the belt to stop with the engine running as the brakes are applied? I have to find a better option for this.

Would need to go on the VC 460 clone engine

Comet 780 is what I use, the belt alignment and tension is what needs to be just right. Idle speed is also key. I can shift from forward to reverse and back again while the engine is running. I can drive it, stop, apply the brakes....it'll sit as long as I want it to, hit the gas and go, and repeat....all while in gear.

What kind of trouble are you having?

Hit the brakes and come to a stop and engine bogs down and dies. Can shift if moving, but if stopped and belt is bound up it won't shift. Using a comet 780 now. Belt has been adjusted, any looser and it would come off too easy I think. Belt is new also and will stretch a bit when broken in a bit more. Have idle adjusted so it will run but just barely so it is a low idle.

I also have 780 on my VC 460 . I have the same shift ability as slo.The VC supplied 780 doesn't engage until about 1800 rpms. I stop at stop signs and idle for traffic and can shift at any time.Another note here belt is fairly tight. I have to derail off the secondary to get it off.Since you had to fab mount and such are you sure everything is lined up for proper operation?

I'll try to get a video of it tomorrow to see if any of you can clue me in on what may be wrong.

Sounds like it might not be straight/lined up properly. Look on the sides of the belt, is one side scuffing more? Also, if the belt is not the proper width, meaning too wide, it will rub the sheaves. I use a 1 3/16" width.

What rpm are you idling at? Take the belt off and let it idle....wonder if your idle is set too high? Mine idles around 1000 rpm and seems fine. I've had it as high as 1200 rpm and it still works well. Once my idle hits 1400 rpm it will start to spin the primary a bit and is difficult to get into gear.

One note: if I don't have my foot on the brake the primary will spin the belt. There has to be some resistance there.

I'll have to get a tachometer and check the idle speed too. I'll work on that the next few days and post some video.
