Default Need some help - VC 460 Swap into a UTV

OK, some of you may have seen in the lifted carts section that I got a Bush Hog UTV and am putting a VC 460 into it. The UTV had the stock chassis harness and originally would have had a Honda V-twin in it. I am finishing up the install and tried to fire it over today, turn the key and nothing. Have replaced the relay but still nothing.

I attached a copy of the wiring diagram from Bush Hog. If anyone can offer help I would appreciate it. If you need pics of anything on the cart itself with regards to the wiring let me know.

For reference, I have attached the cable from the battery as well as the wire coming from the 40 amp fuse both to the starter solenoid on the VC460 starter.

I am going to start going through the trouble shooting in the Bush Hog Service Manual tonight but wanted to see if anyone else has any ideas before I get to that point.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer me.

Wes

Looks like it should hook up the same. The mag kill should turn to ground when key 'off' and nothing while running. Do not put 12v to the engine kill wire it can blow the coil (which is a mag in this case). Starter solenoid relay wire should go hot on 'start' only. If you have it hooked up that way I would simply check for 12v at solenoid (the small wire from the start relay). If not you have to check for 12v up that circuit as any of those safety switches can turn it off and A2 on the relay would be dead. Have to put key to 'start' to test that circuit.

If the key then A3 would be dead you are getting no 12v from the key to pop the relay. All that is just to run the starter, which I assume you have the 12v and ground heavy cables from the battery hooked to the solenoid and the engine block already.

In simple, the key sends 12v to the relay to start but the relay gets 12v from the safety switches to power the solenoid....which will not be there if they are not happy. The key needs power to pass on and the relay needs power to pass to starter solenoid.

You can jump 12v to the solenoid and see if it turns over just to check the engine starter (A5 wire).

The 40a fuse appears to be power to the 'power port'. Remember when you get it running good you can drop it off at my house....

So the red cable from the battery should go to the port on the starter solenoid that is just under the gold starter in this pic right? I keep thinking there should be a wire to the starter solenoid to tell it to go then the seperate large cable from the battery going directly into the starter but there are no terminals on the starter that I can see.

Yes there has to be a small wire to run it and the large power terminal to power it from the battery direct. You can see both here is yours different? The large cable is on the nut and small wire plugs in with rubber boot.

When I did the clone with elec start also kept the generator on it. So I made short cables to jumper the power from the battery cables on the generator to the solenoid and the engine block; so both were hooked up.

OK, now we are getting closer to a fix! The link you posted was "permission denied" but I saved the pic and attached it here. My cable is going to the post with the nut, but the boot is just like the one on this one in the pic and has a black cable running to the other side of the starter, so there is no empty terminal on the starter to plug the "signal" cable to if that makes sense.

I got it sorted out, found the terminal and hooked the purple/black wire to it and it turned over like it should. Now I am out of town for a couple of days then hopefully I can get the fuel tank and lines finalized and get some fuel to the carb and get this thing started up. Thanks for the help sho

Been following along. Can't wait to see this beast. Are you keeping it "Mad Max Style" or are you going to have body panels? Maybe a golf cart body on top?

It's got a hood and bed on it. Bed hasn't been installed yet but will be this weekend.

Now I'm having some issues with the clutches and shifting. Won't let me shift out of gear into neutral and another gear (has high and low along with reverse) unless you kill the engine. I'm pretty sure this is a clutch issue. Check out these pics of the secondary clutch and tell me if you see something wrong.

Thanks for any help you may be able to offer.
