key start for starter generator?
Anybody have a diagram on how this should be wired? So I can use a key switch to start the cart and also the generator as well? I want it to idle and charge as I am putting a 120 volt inverter on it for running work lights or small tools. Any help would be great.

Re: key start for starter generator?
Think this will work? Looks promising to me anyway. The top diagram is the one that matches up to what I'm looking at doing |

Re: key start for starter generator?
All you have to do is wire a switch that shorts the pedal switch and it will run long as you have the key on. The wire from the key to the pedal and from the pedal are both near the solenoid area under the seat. The key powers the pedal, pedal powers the coil/ignitor/and solenoid to start/run.
The only problem you will have is the gen does not charge much at lower rpm, it would need to idle fast to charge more. You would have to put it in neutral and rig the idle to be faster, but could be done with a throttle bump off a diesel pump or older carb car. Then you could lock the brake as well. |

Re: key start for starter generator?
Unless you mean you are using some other generator that was not from the golf cart original? That may be different, but most GC have hot wire to key, then to pedal, then fires up everything like the ignition/start solenoid/etc to make it run. That one wire makes up most of the 12v+ wiring. In a GC the gen is on all the time it just turns into a starter under 600 rpm or so. Some gen only make power and do not start, usually the VR runs the gen in those. In a cart the VR runs the field to make it charge when needed, but the pedal connects the start solenoid that hooks the gen to the battery then it starts and later generates at speed...in case something was not clear lol.

Re: key start for starter generator?
Maybe in addition to wiring an ignition key and run at idle, maybe you will need to place the cart in neutral and have a throttle override that holds the engine at a set rpm? Sounds dangerous, yet exciting (unmanned cart projectile).
Some food for thought. I use a large deep cycle battery for my gas cart and I have a large solar panel up top that keeps it charged. Doesn't take anything to start my cart and I can run accessories a long time off of it at night without worry. Not sure which inverter you are using either, but some are more efficient than others. I think it will be best to use one with a low current draw (not harbor freight junk). You don't want your inverter drawing 400watts when only a 50watt load is attached. |

Re: key start for starter generator?
I too have considered the high idle idea. With the pedal start deactivated they will stikl have use of the oarking brake so it shouldnt take off too fast lol
