Default Degrease a belt?

This has never happened to me before so I'm asking the experts. My valve cover popped off while driving the cart and oil went everywhere. Unfortunately it covered the secondary clutch, which in turn coated the belt and primary with oil as well.

Can a belt be degreased then reused? Or should I just get a new one? My only reservation is that this particular belt is $79 at the John Deere dealer. Bummer. I tried "Greased Lightning" and "Simple Green", sprayed it on there 3 times and hosed it off a dozen. Seems like the belt "soaked" the oil in.

It's obviously slipping, no question. The sheaves are hot, belt is hot, rubber smell. No fun. So it's parked until I resolve this.

Thanks guys!

You might try brake parts cleaner. I don't know if it will work or not.

I had the crank seal on my 8hp briggs in my cart start leaking and the starter belt is slipping but don't think that the drive belt has been effected yet. Least I hope not.

Good luck cleaning yours up.

Wow Andy...that really sucks. I would try scrubbing it down with dawn dish liquid. ( it cuts oil and grease well ) Then let it dry over night. If that doesn't work then I'd be headed back to the dealer.

BE CAREFULL. but diesel starting fluid wild take most of the oil out. May take several applications.

Well, I can tell you that the following didn't work:

Brake cleaner
Carb cleaner
Denatured alcolhol
Greased Lightning
Simple Green
Dawn dish soap
Diesel fuel

Just for fun I tried one at a time. Wiped it down three times, each time with a clean shop towel. Lots of "dirt" came off with everything except the denatured alcohol. Each time I cleaned it, I'd take it for a spin. And each time it still slipped.

So, I sprung for a new belt.....AAAHHHH! Runs like new! After 2 hours and $70....

Lesson learned. Thanks guys!

Slo... Did you find out why the valve cover came off? Did it just work itself loose?

Yeah, I over-tightened it and the threads stripped. It would have been ok except when I put the billet rod, 1.3 rockers, and chromoly pushrods in the rockers were making contact to the inside of the valve cover. There's a little dimple/angle shape inside there that was making contact and during the test run it knocked the cover right off! So the threads being partially stripped didn't give enough resistance and it just gave. So I removed the inner lining of the pcv valve portion of the valve cover and cured the clearance issue. Then I used a Helicoil to repair the threads. All fixed now.

I got grease on mine took it off and scrubbed with a brush and greased lightning about 10 times to get it off. It was fine after it dried. I'd try naptha it cleans oil/grease very well but I didn't have any there. Its about like mineral spirits but dries faster. In fact that belt is on your previous 94c right now Slo!

Well I still have the belt, so I might try to clean it some more and keep it for a spare. I replied to your post about the clutch too!

I have the video up. Another trick is put it in a bag with floordry or cheap kitty litter (unused of course), shake it up some and leave it for a while.
