I used straight 30w for the break in, then switched to 5w30 synthetic.

I've read something about the straight 30hd oils, don't they contain more zinc for bearing wear? Not sure how true that is. But if so, might be worth it since the stock clones don't use a rod bearing. I don't know if this is true or not, just something I read......on the internet.....

Diesel oils like Rotella T used to have increased zinc, but those also have been mandated to be reduced.

The maximum level of zinc in motor oils over the last few years has been reduced due to it having ill effects on catalytic converters in automobiles. There has been an increase in failure of flat tappet camshafts/lifters in vehicles since. Since I have 4 flat tappet SBC engines, and just broke in the cam on one last week, I wanted to find out as much info as I could before I broke in the cam. Valid info.

Below are a few links to some info on the reduction of zinc, and if we should be concerned. I had these bookmarked, but I can't find, or bookmarked it in a different folder, a link to a very good article from a GM engineer. If I can locate it, I will follow up with a link to it. It basically boiled down to even though most oils today have reduced zinc, they showed no increase wear on flat tappet camshafts.....up to a point. The lifter/camshaft wear did increase with higher lift camshafts & higher valve spring rates. Most of the reported camshaft/lifter failures have been with aftermarket, performance applications.
It stated current oils are limited to 800ppm zinc, and zinc is beneficial up to 1500-1800ppm, but more than that is overkill and may be detrimental.

Bottom line...current off the shelf motor oils still have adequate zinc levels in them for flat tappet camshafts AFTER they are broken in. During this 20-30 min initial very important break-in period, an oil with higher zinc levels like Valvoline VR1 racing oil, or a break in additive with zinc are essential.

From the info I have found (hopefully valid info), I'm not going to be too concerned about the zinc levels in the oil for my quad, cart, lawn mower, etc. I WILL use oil with higher levels of zinc (Valvoline VR1, or zinc additive) in my SBC flat tappet engines with high valve spring/high lift & duration camshafts.

The best sae 30 i found is called "pure guard". I don't think its a name brand oil. I found it at walmart. I guess i might have to make a long trip to tractor supply or wait til break-in to put 5-30w syn in?
