Re: Metal Cutting ??
It really depends on what i'm cutting as to what I use. I have cut-off tool, grinder, sawzall, chop saw, dremel, jig saw. sawzall is probably the most cost effective to use followed by the grinder and cut-off tool. If I could only pick 2 of them to have it would have to be the sawzall and grinder. I also have a plasma cutter and like it very much, it cuts better than torches (gave them away) and does non ferrous metals as well. Why not collect the all of them.

Re: Metal Cutting ??
Why not collect them all indeed! It can get expensive......I prefer the chop saw for bench top cutting and the sawzall for on the cart or heavy in the vice stuff....It will depend upon what your finances allow and/or what you are familiar with. I was very familiar with the sawzall before I met my first buggie. So it is my weapon (I mean, tool) of choice.

Re: Metal Cutting ??
For most of my smaller cutting I use a tool called a Matabo, it's like a 5 inch grinder with a cutting blade, you can also use a grinding blade on it. We use these at work too and they are the toughest grinder type tool I've ever came across. They have a spring nut holding the blade that make changing blades very easy. I could even be a Spokesperson for them.

Re: Metal Cutting ??
I actually use a handheld grinder more than anything when cutting metal.

TNG, prolly some of all.....eventually (LOL). Right now, on this bumper project, I'll be cutting tubing (round and/or square). Got my backup light mounted. Had to cut a short piece of 1" square to get the spacing I wanted. I have been doing a bit of cutting in the past with an air grinder with a cutting wheel (if that's the correct term). Also have a sawsall, and a regular jigsaw. I had to do a repair job last summer on a 3pt finish mower for my tractor. I had to cut off the steel plate that the gearbox mounts onto in order to get to the bottom to replace the pulley. Used the air-grinder on that....but it took quite a while since my compressor sucks. When y'all are talking about a chop saw, are you talking about a "regular" miter-type saw like for woodworking? Can ya get 10" metal cutting blades? If so that would be sweet. I looked for some at the Home Depot, but didn't see none. I love my miter-saw....it cuts straight. |

Re: Metal Cutting ??
I have a Ridgid wood miter saw, 12 inch, only this is my second one. I used a abrasive metal blade on the first one, cut quite a bit of metal building ornimental gates but the first time it got in a bind it stripped the gears out of it so I wouldn't recommend using a metal cutting blade with a wood miter saw. Just my 2cents.
