Default ABS plastic?

I watched a youtube video where a guy repairs a motorcycle fender with a homemade glue made of lego pieces and acetone. It looked like it worked really well. I have a fender to repair on a 4 wheeler and am going to try it. It is supposed to work on any ABS plastic. I need to repair the corner of my carryall where somebody ran into something and jabbed a hole in it. What type of plastic is the front clip made of? Could I use this same ABS plastic glue to repair the golf cart?

Depending on the year of your cart.....prior to 1993, the bodies were made of an ABS plastic. After 1993 on, the company changed the body material to what Club Car calls “ArmorFlex”, a nearly indestructible thermoplastic resin.

Plastics are pretty specific when it comes to adhesives. Most have only one "glue" that is made just for bonding it. I seriously doubt any "glue" made out of Legos and acetone would provide any long term "effective" bonding.

On the other hand.....It might work??????

For the price of Legos these days....it seems a rather expensive way to make glue when a small can of "specific" ABS glue can be found at most any hardware store for a few bucks.....and it was manufactured specifically for bonding ABS.

Harbor Freight sells a plastic "welder".....but thats a whole other story.

there is also a newer way on fixing plastic. they use this same type of gun to fix car bumpers in the body shops and you can buy this one at walmart.

Yea I could replace the front clip with a new one for the price of Lego's.

I think the only reason they were using legos was because they're made out of ABS and you have to use the same type of plastic your working with. Another guy cut up scrap pieces of old fenders and dissolved them in the acetone. After the mixture is applied the acetone melts everything together and evaporates leaving just plastic ready for sanding and painting. That's why I was asking about the body, I'm not sure how you know one type of plastic from another.

I have a pretty good plastic welder and used it to repair broken parts of a Yamaha Majesty scooter. I cut a V into the break and then using a piece of the body plastic from parts I replaced I welded the break. I then sanded it down smooth and painted it. I never had a problem with it again.

I could see where using one of the hot staplers on the back side and then plastic welding on the front would make a great fix.

That being said, the plastic welder I have is over $250 now on ebay. This welder comes with lots of different types of rod, wire mesh and other items to make repairs and also a book that tells you what types plastic certain typical things are made of.

I wouldn't waste my time with the one that Harbor Freight sells. I had one. Didn't even last a full repair.

I bought one for Yamahauler Olifin body stretch. It didn't work well for me. Maybe small repair's it would. I'd sell mine for 50.00, but you'd have to buy some more staples.

Would have made a good Gift exchange gift............. I'd like to give one a try but will have to wait. Everything at the end of the year and little work have the funds low but your offer seems pretty good to me. You can get 50 of each staple type on Ebay for $30-$40.

This is a fairly common repair to motorcycles that have lots of plastic bodywork and works pretty good at "rebuilding" missing material. And depending on what the body is is made of dictates the repair material. The bike I just sold repairs could be made by using ABS pipe glue (not PVC glue) and bits ABS shaved down to the size of slivers. Mixed with the glue the bits melted down and could be applied to the broken area. Find out what your body is made of and search Google for repair ideas.
