Decal options for a rattle can paintjob
I'm looking at taking the rattle can to my 81 Yamaha G1. My biggest issue is there are huge decals on it that I have tried several methods to remove with little luck. I've considered painting the decals a different color to hide the decal outlines that would occur with a single color job. Anyone have any other ideas?

Sand entire body with a red scotch pad or 360 grit. Clean. Then run some body filler along the edges of the decal and create a smoother surface between the decal and the body. Then sand that filler smooth. Clean again. Then use adhesive promoter. Then us a DARK PRIMER with multiple light coats. Depending on desired color you might go back over dark, primer with light colored primer. Then lightly sand Primer coat when dry. Clean. Then rattle can with light coats of desired color.

Will those work to remove the whole decal? From what I'm seeing they are only used on the adhesive after the labels are scraped. I am having trouble getting even the topside of the labels removed.

On fiberglass boats, I've had good luck using a hair drier to soften the decal's adhesive enough to peel off in one piece.
I say a hair drier, and not a heat gun because you certainly don't want to blister the body. I then use xylene to clean the remaining adhesive. |

Tried the hair dryer with very little luck. These stickers have been baked on for 35 years. :p

If you cannot get the decals off with a heat gun and chemical aid, your only bet is to sand them off or paint over them.

Judicious work with a heat gun is your best shot. Work a small section at a time.
