electric old fart scooter Mods?
My grandpa is trying to get me an electric scooter from his elderly apartment complex where he lives, im thinking golf cart controller at 48 volts and lifting it and running stock cart tires in the back, looking to hit 25mph or more anybody have any suggestions for what else to do to it.
And since people are allowed to drive there little scooters on the streets i think i could deliver papers with it!!! |

Re: electric old fart scooter Mods?
Howdy - I happy to own 3 "old fart" scooters in various sizes. (I had trouble walking as result of Polio even before I became an old fart )
What you describe is certainly doable, but I can tell you from experience that a scooter would be very squirrely over 20 mph. In fact, my largest scooter runs about 12 mph pure stock (maybe 15 mph with a full charge and a good tail wind), and I sure wouldn't want to be on it at 20+. The rather poor geometry of the front end is a big factor; not to mention that these scooters almost always have electro-mechanical "automatic" braking systems that I wouldn't want to depend on at higher speeds. Here's a link to that scooter, which is 24 volts with dual rear wheel motors and tree-climbing torque: http://www.americanwheelchairs.com/specscowrang4.shtml It's kinda rare to see one like that; but if you're serious about the project, you may wanna shoot for that one. Most likely you'll end-up with a smaller 24 volt model with a single drive wheel and motor (bear in mind that many scooters are just 12 volt). I own this one, too - in 4-wheel version; and except for my modified Club Car, it's my favorite set of wheels: http://www.pridemobility.com/pdf/Bro...ter/Legend.pdf I'm no sissy, and have the scars from fast bikes to prove it, but in my opinion, that one would be even more dangerous at 20-25 mph! Just my $0.02; good luck and be safe! Last edited by traderrik; 08-07-2007 at 09:00 AM.. Reason: Better clarity |
