why are golf cart tops mostly hard
I was wondering why golf cart tops are mostly hard. Is there a structural reason? Or is just better protection when it rains?
I own a ski boat and almost all ski boat tops are cloth bimini type |

Consider a hail storm out on the lake.
Which style top would you rather be under ? |

Re: why are golf cart tops mostly hard
Welcome - good question. They’re not structural, so maybe to protect golfers from stray golf balls.
Soft tops have been discussed here some where .. . . |

I don't know for sure. Just considering after rain, to be able to pull the top tight enough so it didn't collect a pool... The supports holding the top up, probably do not have enough rigidity to handle the strain, let alone the pool overhead.

Maybe it is a manufacturing price point.

Re: why are golf cart tops mostly hard
I have thought about doing a soft top on one of my carts so I could have a convertible when I want but I haven't been able to see anything that would be sturdy enough. My first boat was small and it had a Bimini top as well but the frame had so many supports on all sides in order for it to fold back it didn't seem practical for use on a cart. Maybe we just need the proper design.

Re: why are golf cart tops mostly hard
Can you imagine millions of golf carts produced with soft tops?
Think about maintenance of that. And ripping apart every time you tow it. |

CC got the roof top situation covered. Long as the gutters aren't clogged.

Re: why are golf cart tops mostly hard
The struts would need to be a lot stronger and have more bracing. Hard tops are part of the structure. A friend has a removable soft top but it is on a roll bar cage type structure. Very stiff on its own.

Re: why are golf cart tops mostly hard
Agreed the hard-top is structural to the “top” assembly, but not integral to the cart. Otherwise we couldn’t run topless. Those scrawny struts wouldn’t do much for a soft top on their own. With cars, some have tried to make a convertible out of a sedan to find how structural that top is. Being as cars today don’t have a separate frame, the top is structural to the whole shebang.
I’m kinda liking this soft top idea . . . . |
