Default Rear axle for trailer mod

My son and I got a shell of a 2000 DS and we're going to cut the front end off and make a trailer to match the cart we just built. Don't know what I can do for the rear axle to eleminate the electric motor (doesn't work) and gears.

Has anyone done this before? What are my best options?

I'm thinking of making a trailer for my cart, with an old axle as well. Was thinking I would remove the motor and make some sort of a plate to cover the area where the motor currently is. Just to keep water and debris from getting in there. I don't see why it wouldn't work. I think you definitely want to remove the motor though. Quite a bit of resistance there as well as weight.

No pics of the axle but I can describe it. Purchase two small trailer 4 lug hubs and spindles with square shanks with 1,000lb capacity. The spindles should be 1" diameter and take 1.5" square tubing. Have a good welder weld the spindles into the square tubing. You can use 2" square tubing as spring seats between the axle and underside of the springs to match the height of your cart. Assuming your cart is lifted. If not mount the axle like the stock axle above the springs.

Use your stock leaf springs. They will be fine, especially since you aren't carrying battery weight.

Less resistance than spinning the axles and gears.

When your locating the axle front to rear - use a bathroom scale under the trailer tongue -- the tongue weight should be light around 50 lbs. The trailer should be balanced as best as you can. Just for saying - you load 6 bales of pete moss weighing 300 lbs - the combined weight of trailer and load is 500 lbs - you don't want 250 lbs of that weight on the ball hitch [load to far forward or axle to far back] keep your combined weight down to about 100 lbs max tongue weight on your cart bumper.

What's wrong with just using the stock axle after removing the motor?

Dirt mud and other junk getting into the rear gear box. Plus turning the gears adds resistance as well as weight.

Unless I am over thinking it?

Understood. Just doesn't seem like all that much resistance to me. IDK.

I push this "roller" around the yard all the time. Doesn't seem all that hard to me.
