Default Drill bits

What kind of drill bits is everyone using? And does anyone know if machining bits can be used in a drill press?

I am usually drilling steel and going threw bits non stop is getting old. I run my press on low speed and use some machining oil to keep the bit cool.

It seems as tho you can't buy a good bit at the hardware store anymore.
Mc master Carr has black oxide split point bits that work well.

Most Airgas welding supply stores carry a good black oxide bit. There not to bad priced either. Ask for the Radnor bits....
By machining bit, I assume you mean end mills...IMO...Its hard to us end mills in a drill press. Most drill presses use a simple taper to hold the chuck on. putting liner pressure on the chuck could loosen it or even knock it off center. They do make a cross slide vise you could use, but don't expect stellar results. Its hard to get the table to stay put no mater how hard you tighten it. If you do use this set up, the more flutes on the cutter the better.

I used to buy drill bit sets at least 3 times a week until I went to Fastenal and bought a good set of "Magnum", Fastenal's in house brand. Made in the U.S.A. by Norseman Drill. Haven't bought another bit since. They cost around $100 for the set and come in a metal case. If I ever need them sharpened I'll just drop them off at Fastenal.

Once you get the bit or the metal hot your just pissing in the wind. You can't abuse a bit either. Don't force it, let the bit do the work. Cutting oil helps to.

"" Cutting oil ""

Yes cutting oil is a coolant not a lubricant, I ran out of thread cutting oil and ran to the gas station and grabbed a quart of oil and ruined a set of pipe dies in four threads.

Cutting oil (white water) is a mixture of oil and water. cools and lubricates simultaneously iirc from my early days in the machine shop.
Has it changed ?

Chris.
