Default How to attach bed to make it a dumpbed?

Rebuilding a 1990 Yamaha G9 It came with a metal bed that was in rough shape- after some beating with a hammer, paint and rubberized undercoating for the bed [works great- soft enough to sit on!] it is ready for mounting.

Then to drag this project out longer I thought about making a dump bed.

How to mount? I have the framework rails on the cart for a non-dumpbed and I was thinking about drilling horizontal 1/2" holes through that- inserting a metal rod through left and right rail and than attaching rod to the cart by saddle clamps. This would be my pivot point.

Basically there would be a metal rod from brake light to brake light.

Anyone fabricate their own mounting system?

I built my own. The tubing is all 1x1 maybe 11ga I forget. The bed is 30x40. I put a large barn door spring pin deal behind the seat to keep it from dumping. The pivot is about 2/3 the say back on the bed. I'll try to post a pic I have one someplace. It works great. I put 2x8 cedar on for sides/front, drilled holes and ran large deck screws up from bottom. I welded some heavy sheet angles on the back corners to mount wood and slide a gate down into. Didn't have time to hinge it. Use foam weatherstrip to keep it from rattling. Since I don't take the gate out that often it has worked fine. Used a piece of alum sheet for the bottom, it was left over stock car body sheeting. Put it on with some big metal rivets. The only issue is I had to fill the end of the bed tubes with silicone they dripped rust on the body from rain, though its not in the rain very often. The box angles down a hair to the front so it dripped out the front.

Sho-
Great pics!! Yours is almost what I was intending on doing! The bolts are the pivot point right? The only change from yours to mine is the attachment to the bed. No welding here due to well.....I don't know how!

So take your bolts and replace with one long continuous steel bar, use saddle clamps to attach to the bed and I guess it will work based on your design.

You also solved my "How do I keep it from dumping" issue. I like the spring hinge. Guess its back to Home Depot for more supplies!!

Thanks for the info- nice design.

Yes the bolts, its not like they get any wear. 3/8 bolts. I did it that way because I put it on the frame and centered the bed, then tack welded it where I wanted it. That tubing is actually very strong wish I had some more lol. I used to buy it at work back then for 9.40 a length was 20 or 24', before steel went up.

That pin fits real tight, I put some weatherstrip under the bed too. I have to push down on it to get the pin to pop in. Otherwise it will rattle all the time. I shimmed the mount to get a tight fit. Do have to twist it some to get it out but not bad. Again, its great but I don't dump it that often. I had a couple other things on there before I found that pin. Actually I have a tailgate protector I'm going to cut up and put on the top of the wood and some alum angle to make it look nicer. Have some LED to put under the bed and in the front cubby, getting a new engine, all kinds of fun for the cart this summer. Oh, an big LED tail light too its about 10" long going to put it in the middle not sure how it will workout.

Here is my trailer hitch

And the lift I built (in '99 lol)

I might do some adjusting on that if I have time.

ScottyB that is a cool install of the cylinder! I'd like one, but mine dumps pretty easy its not that big and I'm not that old lol. I do have an air compressor off a jumper pack I want to mount under the seat someplace.
