tapered shaft?
Does anyone make a clutch for a tapered shaft that will work for a GC? I see a lot of reasonable alternative engines which have tapered shafts...I have heard of machining the shaft but, does that require removing the crankshaft from the engine? ( I'm kinda looking at that army surplus 4 cyl again)Thank in advance.

Re: tapered shaft?
Yes you would have to remove the crankshaft from the engine. In order for a machine shop to mount it in their lathe between centers it has to be separated from the block and rods.

Re: tapered shaft?
I looked at the one on my CC and it is tapered? So, what is the difference? Is it that the big comet clutch is not tapered? Sorry for the dumb questions.

Re: tapered shaft?
Most of the non belted generator motors are tappered shaft but don't know if the tapers would be the same.

Re: tapered shaft?
That was kinda my next question...I have heard of guys using generator motors but having to have the shaft turned...Does any one know if the tapers differ?

Re: tapered shaft?
Yes cart motor taper is a 30mm 1:10 taper with internal female threads. A generator is smaller dia and way different angle and has external male threads. Not impossible but not real easy. We do have a adapter to run a standard cart clutch on a 1" straight shaft. Crank must be cut off shorter and retapped.

Re: tapered shaft?
Thank you Tom for explaining that mystery so clearly.
You do know your stuff! Can you answer one more Q, please. I found this add-on shaft supposed to be able to attach to the flywheel side of a motor to change rotation. Is this thing a bolt on and do you know if they are any good? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=280224739874 |

Re: tapered shaft?
No that really wont work, That side of the motor(flywheel side) was never intended to have a load pulling sideways (like a clutch) Alot of motors do not even have a bearing on that side just a bushing or a much smaller bearing. The part you show is like for a shaft drive tractor or pump where there is just a rotational load and no sideways load as the load would be about 5" beyond the bearing or bushing and with that much leverage it would destroy the block in no time.
We also have the ability to machine the crank on the 16 HP liquid cooled kawasaki generator motors, While the crank is in motor. Did about 400 or so so I have practice. Lots of people bought those motors off ebay thinking thier clutch would fit on the taper. There was one SOB out there that was giving out my number to ebay buyers telling them I had a clutch that would fit that generator taper. I had to break it to them they were screwed by seller. Only option was machining crank to fit clutch, which was very costly due to about $75 shipping charges each way plus machining. |

Re: tapered shaft?
There sure is a bunch of misinformation out there, still! You are like a regular mythbuster! LOL
Well what is the success rate for the average joe reringing these old beasts ( fe290 etc.) on the garage workbench? |
