Custom Grill "Rolls Royce"

Upon urging by some and hoping to help others, here is my custom grill attempt. I'm going for a Rolls Royce look for the grill. I don't think I'm going to theme my whole cart as a Rolls but somewhat as an early noble classic. If anything, I'm sure my cart will be unique.

The body of the grill is about 12" wide by 15" high in the middle. The internal open area still needs 0.050" removed from areas, here and there, to be truly square and I'll get that done tomorrow. Tomorrow I also plan to put in all the vertical fins in at some yet to be determined angle and quantity.

Anyway, here are pictures of what I have done so far.

this was my attempt to make the front skin from one piece but to much warping made me chop the top off.











Ugly, ugly welds. Just hoping they stick till I can redo them properly.

I have layed the grill body onto the steel I rolled for the vertical fins.

to the left of the grll are all the fins I cut. I was hoping for a greater radius but it'll do fine.



The fins are just loose so I could get a look.



I put the dew bottle in the last two pictures for size, it's a one liter. I do also have to admit the welder at work was completely out of gas so my welds are awful. I'll fix those tomorrow.

Tell me what you think and please, please push me off the tracks if you see me in front of a charging train.

That's going to look Great! I had an MG TD that had a similar look to your grill. It just didn't have the Rolls " peak ".

Thanks. No lie there Andy, I'm glad I have SOME tools available. More skilled people can do more with less but I need every advantage I can get.

Thanks Simple Man, do you have any pictures available. All forms of reference can help me.

I'll have to think of what emblem I will put on the peak, if any. Maybe if I can class the build up enough a bobble head hula girl on the peak can even everything out.

Actually yes, thanks.

Here is what I got done today. Not as far as I had hoped. Eight hours of weld, grind, weld, grind. rinse and repeat. My pencil grinder is going to help cleaning up between the fins. I need to find out how far my prep needs to go for this baby to get chromed. I just could not get all the weld pit holes filled, and I got frustrated and said screw it..... I'll use glazing putty and paint the sucker!



OMG the filing, and filing. Filing is my only means to try and get things square. All the power tools are to aggressive.

Took me forever to get the center post installed.

I don't think he is going to chrome it anymore. More than likely going to get a nice coat of paint!!!

There are a couple shops in Spokane, Wa who do it. I called them and talked to a fellow who told me I can fill all the pits left from grinding the wire feed welds with silver solder with a 45% or greater silver content.

So.... Chroming is back on! Sorry to trump ya Colt but you wouldn't have known and I did post in my build thread of my frustration and giving up for paint.

Now to update what is going on. Last Sat (Thur today) I spent all day in the shop and got frustrated at the end of the day. Most of my frustration was due to the pits and the fins not going in as I wanted. My fin issue is from trying to rush. I walked away and thought about things. On Mon the solution came to me...

JIG IT!!!! I don't know why I didn't think about making jigs before but I was rushing and just wanting some visual progress. I know better than rushing, sheesh in my profession that is not good and at work I'm a professor of doing it right the first time! Even though I try to stress to myself this is just a cart and not the space shuttle. I can swing to far, outside of work, towards the idea of just getting it done because it doesn't matter much. Well, I'm never happy with the end results whenever I think that way. Others may say it may look fine either to be nice or just because it does? But I like things nicely done and this cart will be mine so I must be the one happy with it. Ramble, ramble, ramble, ramble, hehehe. Point is, I should know when I am getting frustrated to just walk away, there is usually a reason and an answer for my frustration.

I have removed all the fins and am starting over on putting them in. I'll post pictures later today. Since chroming is back on the table I may only be squaring up more corners and edges today? I need to turn down the volts in the welder and speed up the feed, I'll play with it. I didn't have any means other than my eye and a flat edge to check corner squareness's. I got my machinist square and a couple other things with me today. Weld, grind, file. Weld, grind, file. Rinse and repeat. Oh joy

I need to add a safety concern. Wear safety glasses at all times when doing this sort of stuff. I had been wearing my normal glasses thru all this and I took my glasses off to see the fine detail when working with the diamond tipped bits in my pencil grinder on Monday and got a "Speck" in my eye. Yesterday I finally went to the optamologist who picked it out and routed around in my eye with HIS grinder. I brought my perscription safety glasses home too, and plan to use them. They just don't have the bifocals that I need.
