Where to start fab first?
I have a 77 electric hd. I think i am going to paint on bed liner for the body. I'm gonna add a radio, speakers, headlight, neons, homemade rear seat, and some random diamond plate pieces and gauges to the body. What do I do first? Do I paint then drill / cut holes or vice versa. I've never did anything like this so not sure where to begin. Also anyone have opinions on the frame and wires ect on how to clean up. Seems silly to have this nice body then lift it up and have a dusty muddy mess underneath!? Do ya repaint everything and go all new or is there a simple way to clean it up? Any response would be greatly appriciated!

Re: Where to start fab first?
Welcome to BGW!
Start by cleaning everything then do all of your cutting, drilling, building and fitting. Disassemble everything, prep and paint. When paint is dry, reassemble. How far you want to go is up to you. |

Re: Where to start fab first?
If you like reading, I have a very detailed build thread from start to finished(well I thought). It is an ezgo but the concept of a restoration is the same! Mine started pretty nasty and dirty too. Check it out.

Re: Where to start fab first?
Welcome to BGW TJ.
TNG and Colt both have excellent threads to read for some tips and inspiration. I went with a ground up restoration and am now on to heavy modification. TNG is so right on about starting with a very good cleaning, even disassembling to do a great job. Last thing you want to find is something "Not right" while in the middle of a mod, and then have to get side tracked and have an additional unplanned project. TNG's order of things is spot on two. The hard part, but very pleasing when it works as planned, is to try and always be thinking 3 steps ahead of what you are currently doing. You knew that already because that is why your asking questions . I powder coated my frame and it cost me 200 bucks, bedliner is an option and I don't know the cost per can or how many cans. POR15 is a good option but that requires about 3 cans @ 40 bucks a pint. The 200 bucks to have it professionally powder coated made sense to me. Most of all, have fun and enjoy yourself. Please post some pictures too. We love pictures. Best regards Shon |
