Default Polish out damage to stock '02 Club Car finish?

I have a 2002 Club Car DS with some damage in the surface pain finish, apparently due to the previous owner placing the battery caps on top of the body while checking battery water level. The rest of the finish is in excellent condition, so I don't want to respray it.

The damage appear to only be in the surface, as if the acid etched the paint. It's too rough to just polish out using a mild abrasive - I'm wondering if this is a sprayed finish, and can I wet sand it smooth with 600 to 100 grit then polish up?

Thanks in advance.
